Ray, I'd like to chime in because you can be perfect in your work on a rod. But first I'd like to say something about the materials you are using. They are not perfect. The rod blank straightness and it's finish is not perfect. The thread is frayed, not twisted or overtwisted and never dye matched lot to lot - not perfect. Look at the guides, the finish, the feet, the plating the pressed i

Doug, I would like to know where you sourced the pulley for your rod lathe head. Your work on that "home made" wrapper is so well crafted that I would like to benchmark the parts. I have everything except that pulley. Can you help? Regards, Kenneth Prager khprager@msn.com

You will feel a lot better if you remove the two that are "off" and re-wrap and re-finish them. Good practice for repairs later too. Regards, Kenneth Prager

The shape of the winding check looks like a ring from a pressure fitting. Try to find Swagelok, mfgr of high pressure fittings. They come in a silver & gold version. You can use the ring and the retainer for winding checks. May be a little pricey, but they have the right shape.

Part of the problem is that it is hard to get a good grip. Use a rubber pad - like those used to unscrew difficult jar lids. Once you have a better grip on the rod surface , a two or four handed grip should work. Regards, Kenneth Prager

I have had the same problem with dust since I share the hobby room with the wife, dog and kids. Take and line a box that fits over the rod and your desk area with plastic wrap. Rub the plastic (with a piece of craft fur, so it has a charge. Place it over the rod. The static draws any dust to it and it stays off your rod finish while it is drying. Regards, Kenneth Prager

I wish I could add some scientific info to this thread, but after casting countless rods I can tell you this. Use the lightest guides, as long as the line is not restricted in being casted in a straight line. The rod, it's components and reel are a system and they need to be in balance for the distance and casting skill you have. The sum of all the improvements in weight, balance and line cond

You can try a few ideas with the foregrip. Extend the cork "x" number of rings to give the angler some extra grip leverage but not so much that he can reach up onto the blank where the taper starts to change. This is very critical as a high reach up on the blank will be a prescription for failure. I have seen some new factory rods lately that have a 6" eva style grip past the 7

I still like to use Custom Poly Build - available at Fish stix and C& G tackle. Very easy to measure and use and not so long an open time as some of the others. Went through a phase with glass coat which is on the fast side too. Found the LS supr to have different characteristics of use but a satisfactory result and can be applied in a low build application too. Regards, Kenneth Prager

Omitted this info for you. Take 7 8 & 9 wt WF or bonefish tapers and bring your wading shoes. You can fly out to little cayman from georgetown on cayman air Tip - tie some charlies with yellow hair or yellow krystal flash - the bones there like juvenille yellowtail fry. Try bonefish biters to - lots of small urchins - ala wading shoes. Regards, Kenneth Prager

You can fish for tailing bonefish on the many "ocean-side" flats that ring the island, or learn to spot the fish as they cruise the deeper edges. Hooked a few and landed a few but those that spooked were large singles. Regards Kenneth Prager
