I'm already looking forward to helping you give out the door prizes again.
As great as the 2012 Expo was I know you'll top it in 2013.
Winston-Salem will be great for dining too.

How about running the Expo on a cruise ship so we can do some fishing too?

I couldn't be happier for you and for all of us who look forward to the Expo each year.
I'll be glued to the Forum in anticipation of the big news.

It was the newspaper that I objected to.
Even when fresh it doesn't transmit any sensitivity to the hand.
Worst of all deteriorates rapidly and becomes totally useless.
And that's assuming no water gets in there.

It could be a lot worse.
When I was about 15 ( around 1951) I recall visiting a little custom rod shop in a very ritzy part of Manhattan.
I'm sure the proprietor catered to the wealthy residents of the city.
When I entered he was standing at the counter assembling a rod.
He had already glued some cork rings on the blank with Elmer's glue to form the rear grip.
Then he wrapped plain 1/

102. Re: just curious
I recall seeing news video of the two former Presidents Bush fishing from their powerboat off Kennebunkport.
George Herbert Walker Bush, the senior, was winding a rather large black reel backwards while it was perched over the zero axis of his rod.
It was a sad day for sport fishing in the United States.

I'm a member of the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum which is just a few miles from my home.
The folks at the museum are always happy to provide info on bamboo rods.
If the makers' names are visible I'll be happy to run them past the guys at the museum and see what I can find out.
I'm pretty confident they'll be familiar with just about any quality name.
Just send me as much inf

I think your Mom did that on purpose.
She wants to build rods too.

Here's a video showing how to take out twists and bends from Bamboo rods.
If this doesn't fix the problem then I don't know what to suggest.

Bill,
There are some good bamboo rod forums on the web.
I think you'll get a lot better info there than I can provide.
I recommend this one:
Good luck.

Bill,
Each bend is different. Take it slow.
I saw a video of it being done.
He held the blank over a torch for a few seconds and applied pressure.
Then kept repeating it carefully.
I had a bamboo spinning rod which had a set.
I heated the rod by holding it over a pot of boiling water while gently pressing the bend out.
I did this a few times and it came out very nice.

110. Re: bambo tips
Bamboo rods will take a set (hold a bend) if their fibers have been overstressed.
But unless the damage is severe that set can be straightened out by applying heat and bending.
This is best done by someone who has experience but it can certainly be learned.

Kurt;
Welcome to the craft and the Forum.
If you un-hide your email address you might get some direct replies.
I suggest starting by combing through all the info on this site.
Start with the Glossary, Library and FAQ's.
Tom Kirkman's book on Custom Rod Building is a great primer.
As you need more specific information, search the Forum (using ALL DATES) and scour the posts.

Last year I built a surf spinning rod on a 12' Tommy Farmer Blank for throwing bait and a few ounces of lead.
Matched to a Van Staal VS200 it's an extremely light combo with plenty of guts.

The mirage system can't be beat. It leaves your hands free and gives you lots of control.
Anecdotal evidence from years ago...
Some friends were kayak fishing in the ocean off Wellfleet, Mass and the wind was keeping the paddlers from returning to shore.
One who had a Hobie was able to tow two others back to shore with ease.
Great yaks.
Would love to have one.

114. Re: Brush cleaner
I use the U-40 brush Cleaner with great results.
My technique is a bit different:
Pour a small amount of Brush Cleaner in a tiny dish and swirl the brush.
Wipe dry with a piece of paper towel.
Wet another piece of paper towel with fresh cleaner and gently squeeze the brush clean in.
I drilled a hole in the brush cleaner bottle cap just large enough for the brush handle to fit snugl

Carbon sleeved foam grip with the reel feet wrapped on with thread or even electrical tape and (if you like) covered in shrink wrap.
Carbon grips seem a lot lighter to me than cork.

There's a huge difference between even a 50# Striper and a 300# Blue Fin Tuna.
You can't expect one rod to be ideal for both.
If you use heavier than necessary rig for the stripers you'll wear yourself out for no good reason.
And if you're under matched in a brawl with a brute you'll pay the price.
Have you considered bringing one rod for each?

I just found that my reel won't fit into a Fuji DPS seat.
It wasn't my first choice for a seat anyway but I got it in case I couldn't find a Fuji Cobra seat.
Fortunately I was able to locate the Cobra. . . thanks to the Buy/Sell page of the Forum.

120. Re: yellow varnsh
That leaves me to wonder if the original builder intended the wraps to appear white and black... or yellow and black.
If the former is true you might want to redo all the wraps with a water based varnish.
