Thad, How much line did you let out? How short was the rod and how many guides wereon it? Thanks, Sanford

I plan to use a 24 oz. Old Salty planer from my boat for tuna that are deep. What short stout blank or completed rod would be recommended? I will use a #50 reel for 200# line. The purpose of the rod is just to hold the planer. The main line will come off of a different rod. Thanks, Sanford Hochman

One more thing that hasn't been mentioned. Make sure the ferrel notch is lined up properly with the weave or thread design you have chosen to make. You would hate to have the reel in place and find out that the design is off center or such. By making the weave or design before you bond on the ferrel that will hold the unibutt, you can avoid the problem. You will be able to line up the ferrell cor

I am not new to rodbuilding, but have a real problem with understanding the wrapping techniques as described in the books. The seem to follow the VW cd that I also have. If someone could help me, it would be appreciated. I understand the concept of "out", "in", "+1", etc. The problem arises in the proper sequencing of the wrap as described in the books. I think some

Thanks Jim, I knew you might respond. I do use A thread and have been thinking about this for awhile. I wish you weren't so subtle in your answer though. (LOL). I think if heavy pressure is put on the rod, it might show cracks in that area between the guides. Once a fish is on the line, I usually forget about the looks. The larger guides do make the area look large. Thanks Sanford

I meant to put this in the last thread with my question: I am dealing with tuna rods where large guides are used and wrapped three or more threads thick, so the blank between the guides looks thin compared to the guide wrap areas. I want the rod to be proportionally correct, thus I would like to coat the blank between the threads, but am not sure it is a good idea. Thanks, Sanford

While using the finish on the guides, I notice that between the guides, the blank is left untouched. I would like to use something to continue the finish between the guides to give a complete look to the entire finish of the rod, rather that have it look much thinner between the guides. I have noticed some rod makers do the whole rod guides and all. Would the finish between the guides split when t

A few days ago, off of Cape Cod, I was pulling in a 50" tuna with a #30 Penn International reel and 50lb line and a someone's tuna rod. I showed the men on the boat the guides as the fish held tight, that the tip and guides were practically twisted 90 degrees. My concern at that moment was not the line, but the possiblity of the rod breaking. I think the spiral wrap would have been the way t

Ernie, We were using the pink 9" squid spreader rigs. I like the black best, but the last two tuna hit the pink. I like to keep 5-6 rigs (spreaders and daisy chains) in the water, and keep a tight pattern so the fish don't have so far to see all the offerings. This month looks terrific, fish and weather wise. I was too tired to go out today, but next week looks good. Where are you fishing?

Billy, The giants start in July in the area of Stellwagon Bank Sanctuary. Then they travel South towards areas such as the BC Buoy and the Regal Sword. You would need a map to get a better idea of what I am describing. That is about 30 miles off the coast. If you get out to the canyons where you find lots and lots of boats, there are giants and swordfish, mahi mahi, and others. As you know we us

Tom, We are fishing for tuna in the 100-500# range. Of course, we always gear up for the big one and anything less will be brought in. These are boat rods obviously, and we use 80-100# line. The reels are fairly standard in size, being the 50's, and 70-80 class internationals. Sanford

Tom, If that is the case, using a 70 or 80 class reel, would you choose the XX or XXX blank? Sanford

Scott, I am not new to the building of tuna rods. I have done many before this, but I the East Coast fishing community is a bit different than the West Coast fishing, and I have heard a great deal about the S glass being used on the West Coast. I have been using Calstar and Lamiglass blanks and been very satisfied, but would consider the newer materials to try. Thanks for your thoughts on the su

Has anyone used the new Seeker"X" blank which is the S glass. This supposidely is superior to e glass which is the standard of the industry. It is used in the aerospace industry and has 30% more pulling strength than the e glass blanks. These blanks would be used for tuna or big game fishing. Thanks, Sanford Hochman

139. Micro sol
What is micro sol and what is it used for? From what I have been reading on the board, it seems to soften the finish so another coat can be put on. Where can it be purchased? Thanks, Sanford Hochman

Mike, I have never published an article in the magazine, and I don't know that Tom Kirkman would be interested. I know it can be applied in certain of the areas you mention, but not in others. I would have to look into it. Thanks for the vote of confidence. Sanford Hochman

No Dale, This real abalone shell that took quite a while to figure out how to get it on the rod blank. It came out real nice. If enough guys were interested in the process, I would consider making a video. Sanford Hochman
