i did this once by repositioning the hoods on the seat to hold the casting reel on the side opposit side..the fixed hood just pops out and i rotated it 180 dec. and the sliding hood is regroved on the other side so that the hood can be turned 180 and slide to hold your casting reel..also the guides will automatically be on the bottom for your spiral wrap..i left the spin butt guide on and just di

the spiral is great way to get the most power out of your rod but even more important is the number of guides..use at least 10 guides to get every inch of effort from your rod..you gotta turn them around first. lol.

hi Jay..i built them the same way as my flip rods only on tetescopic rods which when extended left about 45" of space for guides..i placed 9 guides at every 5" equal spacing..fished with guides down or on top just rotate rod tip 180 deg...no bumper guide...i let line rub on the blank, never ever a problem. if you sell the rod the buyer has option to use it with guides up or down with no

oops, my mistake..i didn,t see anything about surf rods til now..the guide sizes you gave could have been for an ultra light rod not too many years ago.lol.

i do what Tom is doing only more so..i only use 2# or 4# fire line and only the butt guide and then running guides no transition guides..i try to get the first runner (choke) as close to reel as possible with the butt guide deflecting the line to half the angle formed between choke and reel..it,s like having two choke guides, each doing half the job..your creating a poor man,s turbo guide system.

hi Gabriel..just curious, what are the denier of these rod winding threads and how many filiaments make up A and AA thread..Thanks..

i wish i could use wire to wrap guides but all my rods would snap because wire does not allow the rod to flex properly so we have to use thread with just enough stretch to allow the rod to function and not break..too much stretch allows for guide movement..guide movement is a big no no..

another solution looking for a problem..maybe this thread is more compatible with graphite guide frames..lol.

i remember one time going into a fly shop and the man working there showing me fly rods built for prformance..they had 12 big chunks of plastic hanging on them including the ferrules..sorry no way..if you got epoxy on your rod your not built for performance, your built for cosmetic reasons not performance..there is such a difference without epoxy..it,s like night and day and a lot cheaper than $1

Spencer, i think some feathers need to be ruffled because you got inexperienced builders getting these ideas from so called "experienced" builders..three things scare me, atomic bombs, torching finish to get the bubbles out and cutting blanks, and maybe not in that order..i saw a friend take his favorite 9' bass bug rod and cut an inch off the tip and two inches(who just cuts off two in

hi Scott..my experience at repairs is very limited but maybe a small glass sleeve or a thread wrap soaked with perma gloss, not epoxy(too heavy) would contain the splintering..good luck.

hi Rob...you can still measure the CCF now and check it down the road to see iff it changes...doesn,t have to be a new rod does it..

i,m not naming names but i had an extra fast rod like that..i ran hard pulling spinbaits and crankbaits on it..since it was a casting rod it had the guides on top which greatly torqued the tip of the rod which being so thin twisted a whole lot..years later i noticed it splintering also but i was not too surpised because of the twist in he tip under load..the rod was not designed for such loads i
