Just curious if anyone has seen or used the new Sears 8 inch mini-lathe? I just picked up the new Craftsman tool catalog at Sears this weekend and noticed this item is new and only sold through their catalog or website. It looks like an ideal size for turning grips and maybe reel seat inserts. It's priced at about $150 or so and definitely looks like it could fit in my budget. I'd like to hea

For anyone who would like to use a drill press to speed up the reaming of cork rings, but doesn't feel the need for a regular size drill press, consider the Dremel Motor Tool and their Drill Press attachment. Most of us have a Dremel or similar brand rotory tool for all sorts of work. It can be an inexpensive option when purchased used or on an @#$%& site such as @#$%&. At full retail one woul

My new mini lathe will be arriving from Grisley's this coming week, early Christmas gift from the wife. I will need a couple of your mandrels so one of my kids will be giving them to me as gifts. He or she will get off light this year. Happy Thanksgiving.. Ellis Mendiola

Following is the RodMaker Magazine Index for the first 5 volumes (years). I did not include rod building news items nor the Q&A columns that ran in each issue. Everything else should be there. For a list of topics in an issue by issue format, see the back issue page at www.rodmakermagazine.com I have tried to break the topics down into specific categories where possible. ................

Since there has been a lot of talk about low cost lathes lately, I will pass on a spam add that came on my email last week. Grizzly industrial makes a small lathe that is designed to work with an electric drill. It has a aluminum bed, a tailstock, moveable tool holder just like a larger lathe and a place to mount the drill. $40, but it was on sale for less last week. I checked the grizzly sit

Hello to all, Well, after much debate and flopping back and forth,I finally went with a Forcast power Wrapper and a Grizzly G8690 Mini Wood Lathe. And I saved enough over the price of the Renzetti to buy an Old Florida LA55 and the 9wt blank and some restock of building supplies. I am a serious Hobbist, who also builds a few for friends . Maybe I'll expand, maybe not. But I really do appriceate the

I have not purchased a lathe yet, and I've been getting more and more customers asking for special grips. Is anyone doing small lot turning on a regular basis? I could see ordering a half dozen at a time in various configurations, simple stuff like Flor w/ burled ends or mabe stagered patterns. My ultimate plan is to buy a lathe and turn my own, but with winter here the rod building buisness has

I have been looking to purchase a wood lathe soon, and have only been able to see one that Sears has ($400) But was not to impressed with it. Maybe one of you fellas might steer me in the right direction. I would like to turn my own inserts and reel seats, and be able to bore a hole close to the ID of some reel seats. Thanks so much for all your info you have put on this fine internet. Stan

I would like to start turning my own cork handles, but want to find the most inexpensive way to start. So far, it looks like a mini-lathe is the best way to go such as the 13" between centers one from Harbor Freight for $130 or the www.grizzly.com G9247 mini wood lathe for $140. Does anyone have any advice concerning these two? I also though about rigging a drill or drill press, but si

The subject has come up pretty often and I wanted to pass along a new mini-lathe I saw today that is very inexpensive. Sears Craftsman has out a new 8 inch swing mini-lathe for just $149. The motor is built in and has 3 speeds. There is an eye shield protector and the machine looks well made. It's small but should be find for turning fly rod grips or seat inserts. Not very heavy. I'd guess

I've been looking at a variety of powerwrappers and I am quite shocked at the prices! It almost makes me want to build my own. I was just wondering how many of you make them versus buying a commercial one? It doesn't look like a complicated tool? Am I just being naive or is there more to this? Your input is greatly appreciated.

After several years of good service but only occasional use, I am retiring my Ryobi 618 mini lathe and will be happy to sell it. Anyone who is in the area and might want to inquire about it can email me for the details. Sorry, but I don't have the time to bother with shipping it anywhere. It's not much use as a serious woodworking lathe, but is decent enough for turning cork and EVA. ........

Ok, I went out and bought a lathe from Harbor Freight, now how do I turn round stock? I'm trying to turn a cork grip but have no way of attaching the rod to the lathe? I've read the lathe threads and there doesn't seem to be anything that address' this topic? There must be accessories that I can purchase to attach round stock to the lathe? Anybody have any ideas? Your help is greatly appreci

I have seen many of you discuss small wood lathes on this site. The October issue of Taunton's Fine Woodworking has a complete test and review on the following midi-lathes: Delta Jet Frisch Nova General It is a very good review with plenty of information on the pros and cons of each unit. For the record, they liked the Nova the best and the General was next in line. But they gave all the uni

Does anybody out there have a used lathe available at a resonable price? Needs to have 15" between centers, chuck, tailstock, motor is not important. I've been using a friends and he is moving. I don't know who i'll miss more, his lathe or him. Just joking, its hard to find a good fishing partner and I will miss him too.

Hello Everyone! I've been recently thinking about making or just buying a small "bench-top" style lathe for turning cork and eva handles. I've checked out some different lathes on Woodturners web site, but I was wondering if there where any other suggestions out there. I'm not sure what to look for. I don't want to buy a "cadallac" if I only need a "caviler", i

Greetings to all I recently purchased a small "mini lathe" and have used it to shape some pre-made cork handles. I liked the results of this, and am ready to take the next step, turning grip inserts, and in the future turning reel seats and butt caps. My question is, is there any information on lathe use that is especially for the novice lathe user, and aimed at the rod builder? Thank

I am struggling with the search for a metal lathe to complete my workshop - 15-18" between centers is ideal, with power feed and a tool slide that can be moved / reduced in height if need be to facilitate wood and cork turning by hand. I have a budget of about $750.00. Any suggestions on which companies / products to look at OR avoid would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Sean

Anyone use a drill press as a makeshift lathe for cork (and balsa for lure making) and the like? I worry about the tapered chuck falling out if I give it too much horizontal pressure. I'd love to be able to shell out 300-400 beer tokens on a Jet (or similar) wood turning lathe, but the missus would have a kinipshun (sp?). I should rig up some kind of bearing pressed into a jig, made from a 2x4

I am a new to rodbuilding and looking for a cheap lathe to turn handles with, around $200 and under. I don’t have any experience with lathes and don’t know really what to look for. Can anyone relay their experiences with the “drill” lathes, do they really work or would my money be better spent on a “real” lathe. Does the $149 Flexcoat lathe come with a rod chuck or will I have to m

Just bought a wood lathe for 69.99 from Harbor Freight. 14"X40" bed, 1/2 hp with sander attachment and table with mitreslide, tailstock complete.Just thought that this was a ridiculous price, I don't know how long the sale will last. Not sure of the policy's of this sight ,if this gets edited, then I will certainly understand.

I hope you guys (and gals if there are any) can help me with my R and D department. I purchased a Jet mini lathe for rod building and other projects. I have ordered a scroll chuck and drill chuck for it also. Now I need to develop a mandrel for turning cork grips for fly rods. I'm gluing them up on 1/4" threaded rod and that works OK, but the rod is not true and wobbles in the lathe. I'm en

I'm interested in turning my own cork grips; now that I've caught the "bug" Tom Kirkman warns us about in his book. What is the best setup for this process? I'm not too sure of myself with a hand rasp so I've been snooping around looking for a low cost powered device. For instance, the Flex Coat cork lathe setup. My question is; can I turn the cork on a mandrel or is this thing only fo
