Just a notice that Jet has just unveiled a completely new mini-lathe. It's very small and about 14 inches between centers. Motor is included and it sells for just $129 at HUT products. Might be a great thing for turning wood seat inserts and grips. Very small and easy to transport. Not as powerful as their larger midi lathe but really a neat little package. Just wanted to mention it. Mine is on t

Sorry if this is a stupid questions but I am new to rod building. I just bought a hand wrapper but I wanted to add a motor so that I could wrap with a foot pedal. Does anyone know where I could get a decent motor and chuck to construct this? Also, how many RPM's should the motor work at so that I can get a good wrap and not too fast? Thanks! Nick

395. Mandrels
Do any of the sponsors to the left offer mandrels for turning handles on a mini lathe? Now that Andy Dear is no longer making them, where might they be found? Looking to shop from the list first, of course. Thanks, Dave

I was wondering if anyone has used the Central Machinery Mini wood turning lathe from Harbor Freight (ITEM 41648-0VGA)? I was thinking of picking up one for reel seat inserts. So if anyone has one of these machines please let me know how it worked out. Also, is the spindle a 3/4-16 thread? Thanks, James

The October issue of Woodworkers Journal is out and has an article pitting 6 different mini-lathes against each other. The VicMark won out as the best followed by the Delta/Jet/Frisch in a tie. The Carba Tech came in last. They mentioned that if money was no object then the Oneway1018 was the best. There were plusses and minuses to each machine. If you're thinking about buying a new mini-lathe t

Just completed two projects today, and wanted to share my experiences for the benefit of others ... When I came upon this site, I like many of you saw the work of several people on this board who are creating not only tools to fish, but works of art (at least in my opinion). And of course after building a grand total of three rods, I immediately decided to get into turning my own grips and inser

Photos of the outstanding hardwood grip work on the photopage have inspired me to start work with hardwood grips. Please can you recommend which model of lathe & give me an idea of the other tools I will need. Right now I have a 9" bandsaw and a couple of home made lathes I use for making laminated foam grips. I am a Canadian, so should be able to get the same brand tools. Are there any

Looking to possibly purchase a rod building lathe . What makes a rod lathe special compared to a typical wood lathe . I see companies like harborfreight.com have wood lathe's for $130 compared to rod lathe's from renzetti that cost $500 . I know their are special attachments for rod building but for basic tasks like making a cork handle etc. , I don't see why a typical wood lathe could not b

Have any of you Jet Mini Lathe owners come up with a good system of supporting a rod or rod section so that it can be turned using this lathe. I turn all of my grips on mandrels, but I have to use my Clemen's lathe when I want to strip handles (my most common repair/refurbishment) or if I need to fine tune a grip after it has been glued on the blank. I want to utilize the Jet lathe for this, be

I'm looking at buying a lathe and havn't really used one since I was in school. I've looked at the delta 200,the jet mini, and some really cheep modles at harbor freight tools. I'm debating on if I should buy the cheaper delta or jet, or If the renzetti is the best way to go? If the renzetti is the only way to go then I can justify the price. On the other hand I just began building rods and dont r

Debating on lathes -- How do you think Grizzly's hobby lathe/electric drill setup compares over time (perfomance/quality-wise) against a little more expensive lathe, such as their next variable-speed model. I'm just wondering if the extra $70 or so in price would be worth the investment. Looking to turn reel seats as well as shaping grips. Thanks for any comments! Mike

Hi - Has anyone purchased the Rand midi-lathe? Specifically, there is one on @#$%& that I am thinking of, and I had a couple of questions if you've purchased one: - do you like it? Have you turned grips and seats both? - is the speed adjustment switch-adjustable or manual? - do you know what Morse tapers it uses? Thanks to anyone who can reply, Dave

Exactly how do I drill a STRAIGHT center hole through an 18" block of EVA? I have recently purchased a mini lathe with a bed extension but have yet to put a chuck on it. Don't know if I should be getting a chuck that accepts square pieces as well as round pieces or just get a stepped 3 jaw chuck. Also, should I drill the hole first and shape the grip while on a spindle or should I shape and

I recently purchased a Grizzly mini-lathe and a set of Andy Dear's mandrels. Not wanting to spend too much money on a drill press, I bought a drill stand from Sears or should I say a mini-drill press. The drill press is the one where you use your drill as the power source and it cost $40. In all I have spent $120 not counting the mandrels which my son gave to me for Xmas. I made my own cork c

I am looking to purchase my first lathe and what to know what would be a good set up. I wish to turn and finish rough to fine cork. Have a thread/spool holder. No plans on weaving, or turning wood. Can someone give me 3 options. Is there a article in the rod maker magazine that lists all that is available and how they were rated?

I am still in search of some new lathe tools. I have seen some that were made of chrome vanadium steel. It also says its hardness is 50-60 Rc. Can someone tell me the difference between chrome vanadium steel and high speed steel. Also what does a hardness of 50-60 Rc mean.
