362. Lathes?
I am new to rod building and am about to start my first fly rod. If successful, I will build more, and more, and.... I would eventually like to purchase a lathe for turning handles, wooden inserts, reel seat details etc. Can anybody recommend a good lathe for the amateur rod builder? I am based in the UK, so one available to the UK would be even better. Thank you in anticipation, Gary.

Sorry to belabor this issue and thanks for being patient. If I go to a site like Penn State Industries, what exactly will a "Jacobs chuck with a #2 morse taper" be called? Can anyone explain this terminology? There seem to be many variations. I want to use this chuck on a JET mini lathe. Thanks so much, JM

I'm looking to use a JET Mini with Andy Dear's mandrels (18"), like everybody else. I want a good-enough chuck that will pass the excess mandrel out the back of the tailstock. I don't want to buy the JET bed extension. I hear that a "nova scroll chuck" will do the trick. If I go to a site like KMS tools, how can I find exactly what I need for this setup? What exactly will it be cal

Perhaps that one thing that bothered me the most about the Charlotte Rod Builders Show, concerned the success of the rod builders who attended and purchased booth space there. We had 4 (a very low number in my opinion) who set up there in an attempt to sell rods and garner new clientele for their custom rod and/or repair businesses. Two of them told me flat out that they did next to nothing bus

I have been researching Lathes lately and am looking to purchase one. I understand the Jet mini Lathe is high on the list and I have hear the PSI is as well. I am some what confused byt he terms used for themm such as 7x10 or 7x12....what does this indicate? Are metal lathes just as useful for reel seats and cork? Has anyone used a Mini Mill and are they any good? any help will be appreciated. I

I think I may like to purchase a power wrapper very soon. Will there be a huge difference in how fast I can wrap compared to hand wrapping? What do the factories use that wrap complete rods ie.StCroix ...... how long is the Pac Bay unit? I build only spinning rods and casting rods so I only need 8' at the very most.

I was just looking at the new Penn State catolog and saw their new Turn Crafter Plus lathe and was thinking it looks like a pretty good one. I was wondering what you guys think. Should I get the Turn Crafter Pro? As far as I can tell it compares to the JET mini lathe that people seem to love.

I am looking at getting a Jet mini lathe and would like to use it with the turning mandrels available from Andy Dear. Can anyone tell me if the mandrels are compatible with the standard live center provided with the lathe and how is it supported at the tail end? Also, is it possible to turn reel seat inserts on these mandrels and then bore the center out using the jet mini lathe? Thanks Darr

I am contemplating buying a wood lathe like the Jet Pen or Mini. My interests with it include turning my own cork handles, wood handle parts, and reel seat inserts. Would this be a good purchase as something to turn cork with? I assume that one does not use wood tools with cork. How is it for the other tasks, making wood handle rings, and reel seat inserts? Are there other fishing related dutie

Two weeks ago I bought a Central Machinery wood lathe from Harbor Freight. Got it home set it up turned it on and it sounded horrible!! Wasn't happy at all, so I returned it. I ordered a variable speed Jet mini lathe (JML-1014VS) with a stand and bed extension instead and it was just delivered. Does anyone else besides Andy Dear use this lathe and have they had good luck with it. And does a

Is there a reel seat available made of total delrin. I know there is a delrin hood on some aluminum seats. I was at a flyfishing show and was looking at a fly rod and the salesman said he could have the nickel sinver seat replaced with delrin for saltwater use. If there is a total delrin seat and does anybody know who makes them? Thanks, Chet Rich

I've been wanting to get more and more into exotic woods for grips and reel seats for quite some time and whenever I had the need I used a friend's lathe, but I decided to get my own, so I went out and bought a Central Machinery lathe #34706. Does anybody else have a lathe from Central Machinery, and has it been a good machine for you? And any suggestions as to where I can get chucks, mandrels

Sorry to go on about this but one final question. I still can't seem to figure out how to turn a reel blank on this lathe without a tool holder. I know I can use a tool rest but how does one maintain the exact and consistant diameter throughout? Also, a of you mentioned the clemens lathe but i could not find anything on it performing a search. Any help would be appreciated and sorry, that was

I just had a little windfall and was able to purchase a renzetti lathe and just got it set up. I am waiting on the motor now to come in (I ordered the heavy duty one). It is very sturdy and well constructed. Nice job in manufacturing by Renzetti. I found the assembly instructions to be outstanding and most parts were pre-assembled. However, the instructions for use seem to be rather vague for

I have a question about using mandrels for cork handles. When fitting the cork rings onto the mandrel, is it just a tight fit that holds the cork in place on the mandrel? At work, I have access to some stainless steel rod in different diameters and can have a 60 degree cone machined into one end for the center on my lathe. Michael Sledden MCS Fishing Rods

Has anyone looked at the Tradesman variable speed mini wood lathe? How does it compair with the jet vari-speed mini? At a little over half the price $169 of the jet $299 it seems like a better deal.

I've been turning inserts, hosels, etc. now for about a year or so. I've been having good success on an old, beat up Craftsman (circa 1975 maybe). However, I'm wanting to step up and get a nicer lathe. I've been looking at the Delta midi, Jet midi, and Teknatool midi lathes. I would like a midi (rather than a mini) because I do quite a bit of other stuff too (pens, candlesticks, etc.) And, w

I really know very little about lathes but I work at Home Depot and we have a Ridgid lathe for $199.00. I have read alot of posts recently about lathes and thought I would post this. This one is clearenced and normally sells for 299.00. These are not mini lathes as it must be about 30" between centers. (could be wrong about that) Didn't have a chance to really look at one as we had inventory

I use a Grizzley hobby lathe and love it for grips but I am considering stepping up to trying my hand at wood seats. Having no experience with lathes, the recent string on mini lathes and the catalogs that I have been looking at have left me reall confused. What is a #1 MT and #2 MT? Which is preferable and why? The new little Jet lathe doesn't even mention either one. How do you bore the h
