Working on a handle that has 10 coats of Formby's on it. As a final coat, can I use guide finish (Pro Kote) over the tung oil, or am I asking for trouble? Thanks!

Tom, what you describe is probably a big part of my problem. I did not have pressure on the ends while turning. The arbors are a great idea, I am having to use them after the turning of the grip itself (which has turned out pretty good!) Thanks, this board is great!

I think I will try the sandpaper route. I also need to make sure the entire length is snug to the mandrel, as I think that might be part of the problem. Thanks for the tips, appreciate it. Carrington

what a pain to work with! I know I have meat hands, not a finesse kinda guy, but man this stuff is frustrating! I just finished ruining a reel seat insert that I had already glued up 3-4 times! I am using sharp turning tools...what other tricks are out there to make it easier to work with this stuff?

Hi All, I am looking to build a 3 wt fiberglass fly rod in the 7-8 ft range, traditional slow action. I have done some searching, but am not familiar with the good names in the game (other than Steffan, lamiglas). I am looking for something in the $100 range. Any guidance is appreciated! Thanks, Carrington

Evening, Been away from building rods for a few years (built a fishing skiff, took me 3 years!) but now I am ready to build up a couple of rods. My rodbuilding bench has been used to clean guns lately and I am concerned about some of the cleaners/lubricants that I have been using will contaminate my rod finish. Some of the lubricants contain the "S" word...silicone. How and what

Thanks Tom, that definitely helps. He will mainly be Colorado lake fishing, most likely a combination of rainbow & brown trout and smallmouth. I wouldn't hesitate using the 3 wt, but he is hearing from others that he needs a 5 wt.

Hi all, I have read all of the Common Cents info and have used the database many times...but i am having a hard time explaining it to others. For example, I have a Dan Craft FT 863-4 that has a ERN of right around 7.0. I love this rod. It is of course rated by Dan as a three weight, but according to the #'s could handle much heavier applications ( i know this rating is used objectively to

My current project is killing me! Never had this much trouble on a rod, guess it's the full moon! Finish not mixed right, cork chipped out after turning grip, now my second attempt at a reel seat insert (first attempt, tailstock on lathe came loose, i bent my 3/8" mandrel, broke the insert and destroyed my hardware) has reached a road block. I put some masking tape on the mandrel to help

Anyone know if this material will have an adverse affect on finish epoxy? My daughter takes a medication that we give to her by oral syringe. The pharmacy puts a "press in bottle adapter" into the top of the medicine container and you can stick the syrings into the adapter and remove the required dose quite easily and it is very clean. The adapter happens to fit perfectly into my thr

In general, i get pretty good results when applying epoxy to guides. The problem i have is getting a nice, straight epoxy line on the back side of the guide. What i usually do is go back after applying the epoxy and work on the edge with a coffee filter. How does everyone get a straight edge on the end of the guide wrap that has that dang guide hanging over it? Goin' crazy Carringt

Mike, glad you are ok. I've had that happen to me, 'bout a year ago, no fun! Also had a chunk of aspen fly off and crack me in the nose. Some stiches later and now i wear a full face safety shield. I'm certain if it had been heavier wood, i'd be without a few teeth and a crooked nose (don't need that, i'm ugly enough already!). I take the power of the lathe very seriously now! Thanks for t

Morning, I haven't seen any reference to the "Custom Rod University" listing on the sponsor list. I seem to remember Tom talking about a new way to teach rodbuilding a while ago, but didn't elaborate. Can someone fill me in?? Carrington Tate Fort Collins, CO

I don't think Marc epoxied the seat down. He wants the reel seat to slide up and down the grip depending on what type of reel he wants to use (spinning, fly, etc.) He was going to use the old phillipson seat that does this, but wanted the strength of the graphite seat. With the groove he cut, when he tightens down the nut on the seat, it will push the reel foot into the cork, keeping it at tha

John, I agree with Joshua, put the guide on the female end of the ferrule and then re-space the other guides, then static test. The guide spacing charts help with starting points for your guides, but are not absolute. Carrington

I think the moderators do an outstanding job on this site. Do they miss stuff? I'm sure they do. With the amount of posts, I can't see how they couldn't. Is Kevin's deleted link worth going into "Kirkman bashing mode" and putting down how he decided to run HIS business? I don't think so! Obviously, Tom has a lot on his plate. He produces a top rate trade magazine that we all dro

Thanks John, appreciate the response. Now that the CP is dry, what would you suggest for removing the excess dried CP, without damaging the wraps underneath? I took my burnishing tool and tried to flatten the "dried bubbles" out, and it worked to a certain degree. Any other tips? Thanks Carrington Tate
