I put three coats of flex coat color preserver on the wraps i am currently working on. After the third coat had dried, i noticed that i had what appeared to be dried bubbles?? What is the best way to smooth out the surface before applying finish? Thanks Carrington

Jim, Hopefully Stan Grace will see your post. He has been using the material longer than anyone on this board as far as i know. The wood i use is already very dry, so i don't think it will change color over time. I used tru oil on the grip on the photo page. I have also used permagloss. Juniper and cedar are similar, but i don't know if they are in the same family or not. Hopefully so

Jay, not sure what the "right way" is! I have only been building 3-4 yrs, but i always build the grip whole and mount it on the blank. Usually i use a coin or something similar to inlet in the end of the grip. Your way seems like a good way, as you only have to plug the 1/4" hole in the cork ring and not the larger hole i created by reaming the cork to fit the blank. Maybe we

Happy Friday! I need to make a plug for the hole left in the butt end of a spinning grip. The grip and the plug will be of regular burl cork. What technique do you use to make the plug fit well and leave no gaps? I have done this once before and it came out perfect, can't even tell there is a plug, but feel i just got lucky! I cut the plug a little oversize, then forced it into

Read this on another board and wondered if the blank manufacturers take into account what kind of guides are typically used on a blank. In this instance it was a discussion on wire single foots vs. snakes on a fly rod. I have read many times that a blank is a blank is a blank, and I can't understand how or why a blank would be designed for a certain type of guide??? Myth or Fact? "I

I have read Tom K. reference laying mandrels in a teflon baking pan and pouring the liquid in the pan to get 4 cores per pour. So...i went and got a 13 x 10 pan, steel rods, and i just got my order of foam and form release. My question is: after you mix the two parts together how would you pour it in the pan for best coverage? The whole thing right in the middle??? a straight line down the cen

Thanks Tom, that is what i wanted to hear! Sounds like i can move operations to the basement which stays pretty mild. I sure didn't want to have to wait until spring to pour some of these cores! Thanks Carrington

a few questions regarding pouring the foam: 1) The temperature here (Colorado) is well below the 40-50 degree level described in the paragraph below. So if i pour outside, i am likely to get only 50% expansion. I assume that this will make the cured grips denser and therefore heavier? 2) How can I make sure to get good expansion when working with the foam? The expansion process sounds

to put finish on, i agree with Jim, faster is better. 12 rpm is still slow enough where you need a steady hand to get a clean line of finish. I used to use the drying motor for applying finish, but now use a sewing machine motor/foot pedal set up with much better results. Carrington

David, Don't know if it is my computer or your web page, but when i go to the "information" and "about us" page, the sentences run on top of each other and can't be read. I refreshed the page, got out of it and went back in, same thing. Hopefully it is me, but you may want to check it out. I don't think i've had that many beers...yet. Carrington

Keith, I combined the two ideas above...Lowes and habitat for humanity. Found two matching base cabinets in excellent shape at habitiat for humanity at $30 each. Bought the 8' countertop from Lowes. I put pegboard on the wall behind the bench, and a drying box about 4' above the countertop. I used the underside of the drying box to mount fluorescent lights. I went to habitat yesterday and fo

Billy, It is a single. I used 1 x 10 x 10 pine boards to make the box, and am putting three windows on the front board with plexiglass. As for lights, i am going to try the large x-mas lights to see if that is sufficient, then go with the halogens if i have to (like the ones you used or there is a five pack for under- kitchen cabinet installation at HD for $25.00??? that would work). For a

thanks for all the replies, appreciate it. I went with some light timers like you would use with x-mas lights. They were $5 a piece and should do the trick. have a great night! Carrington

Thanks for the responses, appreciate it. What timers do you use? I have seen countdown timers that run about $16 each and the timers that can be programmed to turn on and off for about $5 at HD.

I am almost done with my new rod bench set up, which includes a drying box. I am trying to figure out the best arrangment for setting up the electrical for the drying motor and lights in the box. I want to be able to operate each independently of each other, and use a timer to shut off the motor and/or lights after a few hours. How would the eletrical gurus out there set it up? Thanks for yo

the one i'm most proud of is forgetting to put the phillipson sliding reel seat on the tennessee handle before glueing the two sections together. I was able to get it apart, but i have a huge glue line as a result. Left it the way it was as a reminder to slow down once in a while! Carrington

Hi all, I have seen birchbark and ponderosa pine used for grips. Anybody try any other bark material? In particular, aspen bark? Seems like it is pretty similar to birch . I am going to give it a shot, but wanted to see what others have tried. Thanks Carrington

I have done it using one coat of permagloss, and have had no problems with the thread moving around. Carrington

Jim, I ream the reel seat to fit the blank, just like you would a cork grip. I have only done wood inserts, so i can't speak to the acrylic material. Carrington

Alex, The point of permagloss is that it is a one part urethane finish that is easy to apply, dries fast, and very durable. It stays clear and is flexible. It is very low build, so multiple coats are required depending on the finish depth you are looking for. The downside to PG is the odor and fumes. I use permagloss UNDER two part epoxies. It really penetrates the thread and makes

Jon, Whether it is the best way to do it, i don't know, but i used a reostat or common dimmer switch to control the top speed i can use with the pedal control. Carrington
