Ok, I know coatings are primarily for thread protection.. But by using permagloss I feeling I can get away from more wraps.... The rods I'm building now are going to replace the Pen Senator Stand up 30-80# model (660hs) which I have now. They are very heavy and designed for different type of fishing than I'm doing now.. My finished rods will be about half the weight of the ones I have now. And w

One thing you might want to try is to put permagloss on wraps before epoxy. From my searches here. Permagloss gives wraps about twice the strenght of epoxy. But you have to make sure permagloss is dry before putting on epoxy. I'm buiding 3 Ak halibut rods right now(wrapping). I put a underwap of metallic thread for decorative touch. One wrap of "a" thread on guides. I plan to use 2 to 3

I just recieved new catalog from Batson. They did a very nice job laying out their new catalog. All guides have lenghts , heights and ring size O.Ds and I.Ds . Pictures are very good of all products. And product explaination is very good also...Plus, I like some of the fishing quotes found on some of the pages. Here's one..." Take a child fishing and you will always have something in common&

I bet 6s will work if you make your connections with braided mono. Go to www.danblanton.com/gettinglooped.html for instructions how make them. Most fly shops carry braided mono.

Pat, Grant had some very good points about braided line too. If you go to power pro site, they recommend to use line the same dia of mono you used... If you do that, you have over loaded your gear. I think If you use the same split rings from cabelas you will save your gear.. But it remains to be seem I have't used split rings yet...

Emory has some very good point about braided lines. I find only certain times salmon are spooked is when water is clear & hot... I have just ordered some of these split rings from cabelas. Ulimate saver split rings.. They are expensive up front but I think they will save your gear in the long run...

Pat, I have good results with braided line fishing for salmon in AK. Braided line is much better than mono. No line memory, better feel for stirkes on hardware. The only place I haven't converted the use of braided line is in my trolling rods. I'm using inner line rods for trolling. I'm afraid braided line will wear grove in rod.

Another session of test casting with current set up on rod. I paid more attention how line went thru first couple of guides. I'm now more inclined now to use a single foot stripper. Because of height of current guides & the way line is casted with fly rod.. Seems single foot guides are the taller than a high frame double footer..

I guess a lot more test casting is going here to answer Questions. But moving first stripper maybe farther out? What can I see happen? My thought is you make the rod cast worst . I'm sure???? Tom mentioned line passing thru 16 to 8, 16 to 12 wouldn't be critical. WHY?? Well the way my rod is set up now is first stripper is 25 1/2" form center of reel seat.. About 12" more between fir

I guess it time to start receiving Rod Maker.... and maybe get a few back issues...... Emory Harry I have been all ears, OK here in most archives the first stripper should be located about 1-2" pass arm reach. For easy of line pick-up is that right??? Most generic guide spacing charts first stipper is farther on rod than mine. Mistake # 3 was listening to neighbor about rod. He's a grea

I like this site. It is really helping me build better rods from the start. Mistake #1 I didn't learn to use the Search engine here well. But I'm gettting better at it now... Mistake #2 I really oversized the guides on a 9' 9 wt fly rod I just built. I'm not ashamed to post it. I used American tackle Titans- 20, 16, 12,(double foot) Nic, 10 & 7- 8 nif and 8 tip top. Well how I know I oversize

I just placed 2 4.5 tips on a fly rods using FC tip top adhesive. I had a little discolor in both tips. But I lightly polished them with dremel 421 polishing compound. They are as good as new now. I guess I'll follow the good tip mentioned up above. By shaving some glue off and sticking it inside tip. Next time I wil not over heat tip. It was my first time using tip top adhesive.

Catching fish on it.. I fished with my first rod(9 wt fly) I built last year. I caught Kings, silver salmon, Steel head, dolly varden & rainbows on it. Second best part is this website... There isn't to many rod builders here is Alaska. Find info about building rods would have been hard here... This site has helped me out a lot......

I need your opinions guys on the best reel seat for fly rod. Rod I'm building I might use it in saltwater. Which of these makers do you guys like? Recoil Struble, Pacific Bay or American Tackle?? Right now I leaning towards ones made by Recoil.
