Josh I built myself a rod for the exact purpose you have stated. I used the SJ843-MHX from MudHole. Although its not 7'6" like you specified, it does the job perfect for me. It is rated as a Med, but, to me, it fishes more like a Med-Hvy. I use it for dragging tubes, tubes & grubs w/ 1/4oz+ jig heads, 1/4oz+ fineness jigs, & mojo rigs w/ 3/16oz+ weight. I use a SJ842-MHX, for the

How much time should elapse before the rod can be used after the final coat of finish?

Building a couple of 7' SJ842 Spinning rods using Alconites & the NCG 27X method. My reduction guides consist of a #25, #16 & #10, and my runners are 5ea #6 including the choker. My choker is going to be located 24" from the tip. If I read the 27X method correctly, I should be spacing the runners out equally (ie: 4ea at 4.8", or 5 ea at 4"). But here is where my dilemma

Agree Tony, MHX blanks are great. Sorry if I started a feeding frenzy......just wanted to empathize & explain my decision for the same situation. I think that you would be money ahead by re-tipping & fishing the rod. (as I will be doing)

I am still a believer in the MHX series. I'm ordering 4 more blanks this week. I believe that I may have caused my breakage. Jury is still out on that one.

I have also had an MHX MB843 blank break right on the wrap of the first guide after the tip. It happened on the first hook set, but unlike yours, I didn't hear a sound when it happened. It was only my 3rd build, so I'm going to chalk this one up to some error on my part in the build process. So to confirm this, I'm sending pictures, of the breakage, to Todd at Mudhole today. Personally, I lost

Thanks for the info Tom, but I am curious...........Will these finishes improve durability and resist "bruising" that can occur on the un-finished blanks? This is the only reason I am considering finishing the entire blank. Aesthetics isn't the drive here.

I have assembled a couple of MHX rods recently. I left the blanks "naked" as it came from the manufacture. Now I'm curious about what products are available for achieving a glossy finish over the entire rod. And, when are the products applied, before or after wrapping? Will these finishes improve durability and resist "bruising" that can occur on the un-finished blanks? How mu

I just finished my second build. Wow!! What an improvement, in the finish, from the first. In an earlier thread I related the opportunities that I had with using FC Lite finish. (wavy, footballing, etc.) Of course, it was all due to learning curve that I had to go through. I backed off on the amount applied for each application & wicked the excess after 2ea 30min sessions of non-movement a

What type of preparation should I do before applying finish to my wraps? Last time, I wiped with denatured alcohol. It seemed as though the finish didn't want to adhere to the surface of the blank, or the thread. Someone mentioned I shouldn't wipe down with alcohol and cause contamination. What should I use, if anything?

I just finished my very first build. The only area that I had a major problem with is in the application of the finish. (go figure, lol) I have footballing on the guide wraps & major waves over the decal area. I'll try my best to describe what I did from start to fininsh. Materials: FC Lite Build on Gudebrod NCP thread, MHX Blank with Peel & Place Decal Prep: No CP used anything, ro

Roger Actually, I have not made the plunge on the lathe yet. I just started to assemble rods for my own use, so I guess I'm just an assembler at the momment. I'm sure that as I become more addicted to this hobby, and become a builder, I will step-up to the lathe. Until then, I need to find ready-2-use components. Thanks, Mark

I recently bought the CBC-1 Cork Composite Buttcap from Mudhole. Its a 1" OD taper with a .875" ID. Bob just informed me that that cap is not currently available. I need to find a half dozen.....anyone know where I can get them?

Roger Thank you for the comprehensive feedback. I had found one of your threads earlier, and tried to find the style of extended nut that you used. I had no such luck. The closest thing I found was the KDPS Quick-Lock Reel Seat Locking Nut at Mud Hole. But it looks like the end is wide open & cut square, not cone shaped like yours. I might give this a try cut it even with the end of the se

I am going to use the Forecast High End Foregrip Assembly on a couple of spinning rods. It has a cork foregrip attached to a reel hood the screws to the reel seat. I am pairing the Aero seat with this foregrip. I found that I will have to deal with a 1/8" gap between the blank & ID of the foregrip. I also noticed that the edge of the Aero seat is recessed about 1" inside the end of
