I started trout fishing with a five foot Garcia Conalon rod with a Tennessee handle and built a lot of brown Fenwick ultra-lites also with Tennessee handles and got used to the feel of those handles, but always hated the rings coming loose at exactly the wrong time. Those handles had an outside diameter of .92 inches and the size 20 fuji seat gave the closest thing I could find to that feel, so m

Most of the rods I build are ultra-lite trout rods. The only size seat I use is a size 20. I posted a photo of the seat on my go to trout rod.

I'll throw out two finishes I like. If I want a gloss finish I use Gorilla Glue, sometimes with an epoxy undercoat to fill the grain. This is a link to it's use as a rod finish . Here is another one from This Old House . If I want a more subdued finish I use Odie's Oil. t

I plan to build a trout rod on NFC Delta 602 blank and use a 1000 size reel with 4 or 6 lbs Nanofil. I plan to use a 12 -6 reduction train with 4 runners.. If anyone has tried this I would like to hear how it worked for them. Thanks Jim

Joe I have been fishing for trout with jigs for the last 25 years. I use primarily 1/32 oz and occasionally 1/16 oz jigs on 4 lbs.Berkely nanofil line. My go to rod is made on a 6 foot North Fork Composites blank (FW 601-1 IM) and I love it. I also like the North Fork Composites Delta 602 and Phenix Elixer 601.

Anyone have experience with rod geeks fiberglass blanks? i want to build a 7 foot crankbait rod for smaller crankbaits. I am looking at iconoglass AFPG 744 or Rod Geeks SG70MM. I have used the Iconoglass blanks but not the rod geeks, the price is similar but NFC's shipping is much higher. Thanks Jim

I built a rod for gills and crappies on the NFC P700 X-Ray blank it's a tad longer than you want but makes a dynamite rod. I think you could trim 6" off the butt if you wanted.

I want to build a bait caster for a kid I know. My guess is he will throw crank baits, soft plastic frogs, and whatever else he can think of. He won't be fishing heavy weed cover. He's young enough that he can't drive so he bikes from home to the Root River in Rushford Mn. The river has a pretty healthy small mouth population as well as trout, walleyes and northerns and assorted rough fish. I use

If it were me I think I would finish the rod and fish with it. Fish won't know the difference. Do better on the next one.

I'm going to make a plug for Gorilla Glue as a wood finish. Don't knock it until you've tried it. I've used it on a bunch inserts, blanks, as well as a jewelry box. The method of application can be found on Youtube or on a pdf originally published in "Power Fibers" by Tim Anderson. A link to Tim's pdf is below.

I have used perma gloss on ultra light and light rods. It can require 6 to 8 coats to build depth and has a kind of egg shell sheen. It doesn't level like epoxy. if you don't wait long enough between coats it can out gas leaving very small bubbles. It is way tougher than epoxy and will not crack or yellow like epoxy.Threadmaster used to make a similar finish called Lumiseal that I loved and I thi

Thanks for the replies. I've been fishing stream trout in SE Minnesota for 50 years and have the ultra-light spinning thing pretty well dialed in. Watched the Mudhole video about a week ago as well as a couple of videos of Japanese anglers casting 1 gram lures on small streams. I will build the rod and give it a test. The worst that happens is it gets relegated to bluegill, crappie and small bass

I'm going to build a bait finesse rod for stream trout just because curiosity is killing me. I plan to use an NFC 601 (IM) or an NFC 602 (Delta) paired with a KastKing BFS Zepher reel and PowerPro 3 LBS braid. Would like to be able to throw 1/32 oz jigs. I have a Fuji rv6 I can use for a stripper and minima 5's or 4's for running guides. I am thinking about a simple spiral. Can I use single foo

Our TU group takes a bunch of kids trout fishing each spring and we meet with the kids a couple of weeks prior to the fishing. I tell them the most important part of their outfit is the line. Reels need to be properly spooled and the line needs to be good quality. When someone invents the perfect line (supple, no memory, abrasion proof, minimal diameter and the perfect amount of stretch) rod bui

As I mentioned earlier my buddy broke the 16H off his rod restrung the rod and continued fishing. He told me he didn't notice any difference. His stripper was now his 8H guide located a long, long way from his reel. Sometimes I think we made this more difficult than it has to be.

I have that blank as use it as my go to trout rod, you are going to love it. I use pac bay minimas and agree with Tom 16H, 8H then runners. If i had it to build over again I think I would use 12H, 6H and then runners, I use 4 lbs. nanofil and it has no memory to speak of so I think 12 is plenty big. My buddy uses the same rod and he snagged the 16H when he tripped and it pulled out, continued

Seems to me Ken Preston used the peoduct as a color preserver. It is available online at "the epoxy experts" or on @#$%&.

I know that quite a few years ago there were some posts about using "Max Seal" from Polymer Composites Inc. as a color preserver. I was wondering if anyone here is still using it and what your experiences with it have been like. Thanks Jim

I fish UL and light rods. Have used Pflueger Presidents for many years. I recently tried a Kastking Sharky III (1000) and loved it, bought three more and put them on my trout and panfish rods. I use Nanofil on the trout rods and Power Pro braid on the panfis rods.
