I built a WRI Fusion using the concept system. I tie small knots, using 20lb running line and 50lb BBG shocker. I ended up 25-20-16-12-12-12-10, 10Tip I have not heard, nor hung a knot and have put plenny fish on the beach since building it... Like the previous post said, your smaller guide size should be based on your knot size. Catchemall....

I am considering a RS 908 fly rod for medium SW fishing inthe NC sounds and Ches bay. I have built several rods, but never a Fly rod. I like the Black that you get with the Alconite, so the Stripper guide most likely be the BLNAG16J... From there, I have no idea where to go..Snakes ? concept fly type guides ?? Any help with a guesstimate of snake (or ring) guides sizes and numbers wou

Hello all, it has been while since I posted. Been trying to use what I built last spring..Hope this finds all well...looking forwrd to Charlotte !!! Now the question: (Engineers, sharpen your calculators..) If you have a "soft" rod, say a rainshadow IP965. You are trying to build a rod that will flat out make 3/8-3/4 disappear to the far side of the bar... So, what if you bu

If you are using this for surf fishing, and plan to tie on a piece of shock leader, I would not go below size 10 guides anywhere. shock knots tying 10lb flouro to 10lb Fireline will knock on size 8 guides. My preference for all saltwater fishing is nothing smaller than 10, including tip, and that is for Light or U/L stuff only. On rods using 15lb mono and up, i seriously recommend size 1

I am building a rod for my daughter. She has selected a real light colored pink thread. The rod is set up for M/L spinning, so I will be using single foot guides, with no underwrap. To keep the pink from darkening up, I was thinking about using a white sharpie marker to lighten the blank under the thread, to keep the pink from becoming red. Has anyone tried this ??

Stupid question. My dog lives in my shop. This is a flea year. I need to fog the upstairs. There are a bunch...(lots) of rods on stands, hanging from the ceiling, on the wall etc.. will the fogger mess the rods up ?

Loomis or Lamiglas P844. To save even more weight, instead of using cork, use cork tape for the handle. It really lightens the bottom of the rod up, and (IMO) makes a major increase in sensitivity, as the handle it thinner the rod can sorta rock in your palm. Good Luck !!

Well... Loomis su1448, awesome 2pc 8^bait rod Lamiglass has several, 1362, 1502, Purglass 400-3, 400-4 Rainshadow 1508, 1509 All star had an awesome series... Several friends have the Rainshadow 1509 great rod, too much for my surgically repaired shoulder., some have the purglass, same result. The Lami 1362, or 1361 (1 piece same rod) are great rods, you cannot go wrong ther

You have received many great responses.... with saltwater, you have to include casting distance in any blank question, You may see 2 blanks rated basically the same, with 2 different reactions to loading and casting... saltwater rods can be a bear to pin down a good blank... took me 4 years to select the loomis 1448 for an 8 oz and bait casting rod... You may also ask him of the dista

I just completed a Loomis 1448. It has 7 guides..(BMNAG I think) 30-25-20-16-16-12-12-12 tip.. I aint never come close to casting 8oz as far as that rod will throw......The "extra" (By old school standards) on the tip really makes the rod act better. I think many customs have less guides because more guides equal more cost, and less profit... Plus, I did not have to cut anyt

I just completed my 3rd rod, this is a 12' heaver. I used cork tape on the butt and foregrip (6 foregrip for fighting) I really like the grippy feel of the cork, but am afraid it'll get beat up too quick without any sealer. I do not want something slick... Are there and lite sealer options for this application ? It's about time to put a winters worth of rod building to the test....

I have been told that it is better to use a double footed guide , mounted backwards as a stripper guide fer spinnins rods when using braid.. When I ordered me guides fer the Lami P844, i got the "V" style (BYAG-25) for a stripper.. is dis ok ? Or will I be fighting loops hangin on the stripper ?? 'Tanks !!

Plus, you should always put the lighter color under the dark color, you get color-bleed and cannot keep the light stuff light on top.

I built an allstar 963 for flounder.... built it spinning, kept it very light using concept. have a stradic 2500 with 4/10 fireline on it... on these blanks I prefer the cork tape to a cork handle, it seems to make the blank lighter (have not compared unit weights of cork vs tape, so this is a feel thing) and keeps the diameter much smaller to allow the rod to "rock" in my hand

I took the reel I designed the rod for ( A stradic and using the concept system) put it in the reel seat, the tied a piece of dark fireline to the spindle, and ran it down through the guides, once I got the tip and the reel on the same plane, I just added a 1/4oz dipsy sinker to the end and allow the tension to center the line. On the lighter rod, I used a 1/8 oz jig head, (Hook cut off)

That is a good question... I like my rods to balance (without reel) very close to the front of the reel seat... Typically I use the lightest spinners I can afford, right now I am on a stradic binge...... My 1267 is not tip heavy, does wonders with the big Gibbs.... Not really sure, have had few opportunities to toss the plugs since I built it....

The Armpit measurement is mainly for heavers, although I did build the butt on my spanish and my striper plugging rods (1085 and 1267) to the armpit, to ensure the greatest distance. I am presently building some 8' plugging rods and building the seat to butt length just beyond the elbow (as measured from the reel seat) Personal preference is the key...after all it's YOUR custom !!!! Hello All !!! Awesome Show.....gotta clean a few out B4 next year !! I am building a rod using the cork tape instead of the rings, or pre-made handles. Once I got the cork on, I had the same problem getting the cut at the seat perfectly square, I used new razor blades and tried to overwrap the seat, to use it's frame as a guide....didn't turn out too well....any clues on how to do this b
