Flex Coat has a template you can download. For an 8 wt I am about 1.5” long. Might be a little longer if I make some fancy thin rings of cork.

I am building a Winston Air 2 5 weight x 9' rod. The guide spacing chart from Winston says to use a 12LCT guide. I have searched and cannot find the answer. What does the LCT stand for? Thanks.

I just use a very sharp razor blade. I slice off a thin sliver of epoxy and the thread that is poking up. The 2nd coat of epoxy will cover the spot you removed epoxy from 1st coat. You won’t see any blemish after 2nd coat is applied.

Samuli - LastI was looking for the guide sizing and spacing info for a Sage 590-4 X. Couldn't find it either on th website. So, I went to the link at the bottom of the page on their website to contact them and asked where to find the info on the website. The next day Will Jaques of Far Bank replied and said their website was in transition and info would be added in the next few weeks. In t

Roger - If you want to do clear wraps then you need to thin the epoxy to accomplish that. Many use DNA mixed with epoxy to make it "water thin" for clear silk wraps. I have found that I get pretty good clear wraps using DNA. Set of the epoxy takes considerably longer and of course I do cover it with a couple coats of the ol' mil spec epoxy. Should (or could) we be using somethin

Jason - I ordered 3 of the NFC 8 wt. rods around Christmas time. Took about 3 weeks to get them. I was scared about delivery too but took a chance. Hopefully it was not just luck it took the 3 weeks they said it would.

Phil - What does you list order become if you throw in a NFC Gamma Beta rod? They currently have a great deal going on those rods.

Joel - You are asking a great question and they is probably not a correct answer to it. We all have our opinions and none of us are right and none of us are wrong. A very similar discussion about this just happened this weekend. Check out this post. As I have said before this can be a very personal decision. I have both the Sage X, Sage 1, RodGeek, Proof Fly Fishing and Custom Fly Ro

Here are a few options that I found: Hook & Hackle has a Rainshadow Eternity 9' 12 weight, 4pc. blank and it is currently on sale for $210. RodGeeks has a 9' 12 weight, 4pc. carbon fiber blank for $150. And you can get it in any cool color you want if you are willing to wait a few weeks for them to make it. I built a 3 wt. rod of theirs and it is a very nice fishing rod and looks rea

I don't have the answer for you but here are some thoughts on the subject. I strictly fly fish a ton (my wife is an obsessive fly fisher so we go lots) and have tried many different rods and built a number of different rods. I have found all of these fly rods to be like wine. It is a personal choice - what I like someone else hates, what they like I hate. I love the $10 bottle of one wine

Aaron - Go with the 9' long rod instead of the 8 or 8-1/2 long rod. You will be able to use it for dry flies and nymphing. When working it as a nymph rig the extra 6-12" of length over shorter rods will be a big plus. This is why I use dedicated 10' 4 wt. rods in my drift boat over the shorter 9' rods for when the nymphing action is on.

I should have said this to begin with - Call a local fly fishing shop and ask them what is typically used. Those guys can be a great help.

Ok - I quit being lazy and I went and looked up the Toccoa River. I found this information on a Google search: This post is in reference to a 6 wt. rod "That outfit is a little on the heavy side for most North Georgia streams. It would work well on big rivers like the Toccoa, Hiwassee, Chattahoochee, especially if you are chucking streamers. For most North Georgia water, a 5-weight

Yowch. I would think a 6 weight might be a bit heavy. We fish the Yakima River here in Washington about 50 days a year and they have some 20-24" Rainbows with the average fish about 12-16". I use a 4 wt fly rod mainly. - I have it paired with a 5 wt. line as I find it casts better. If the wind is blowing pretty good I might go to my 5 wt. The only time we use a 6 wt. is when we are

I have a North Fork Composites 8 weight F890-4 Gamma Beta fly rod blank. When you go the the NFC website they provide the guide spacings for this rod blank (they show 9 guides) but do not give the recommended guide sizes. I did use the CCS guide spacing calculator with 9 guides and guide #1 & #9 locations matching the NFC chart to get guides sizes. Then when I check those guides sizes agai

I have used a white India Ink pen to accomplish this. It will typically cover the existing color of tread (I have done red thread with white ink), I still put color preserver on it before applying the epoxy. The India Ink is color fast when you apply the epoxy. Nice thing is you don't have to change colors of thread and deal with that extra work with the trim band you are making. Proof Fly F

I have put feathers on regular ol' rod wrapping thread and have put it on silk thread with no issues. It doesn't have to be on Pearsall's Gossamer silk. You could put it directly on the rod if you wanted although I prefer to lay mine over thread. IMO you don't have to "bite the bullet" and spend the money.

I bought a 1/4" x 12" stainless steel rod at the local Ace Hardware store. It won't have the end setup with a live center for a lathe. Worked for me because I use a drill motor and a bearing at other end for turning my handles (I put a small amount of tape on the rod so it fits the bearing). I typically buy the cork rings with 1/4" holes and after gluing them up they are plenty

That is how I got started building my own rods was a local shop that offered classes. They did it in 5 classes x 2 hours. I agree with Donald that if you can find a local builder that would be the way to go. I am willing to bet he would be thrilled to help you and your Grandpa out. It is surprise you that it will only take about 10 hours to do your first build if you keep things simple. This
