Yes Russ, I took your post as a sort of an attack. No problem. I agree with you that It would have been more accurate to use the word "disagree". I also add extra guides on a lot of my spin rods. I have never known or cared of the weight of a single blank or guides or any other component I use. I simply don't care. I use top components and if the company feels its best to be lighter the

Because I disagree with someone doesn't mean I think they are a liar. If you disagree with others are all of those people liars to you? Answer that. How do you know how I build my rods. I never even consider weight. I try to build quality rods with quality components. If those are light then that's the way it happens. I don't go out and look for heavy or light components. I usually use REC or Fuj

thanks Mo...I can buy that....at the tip of a rod on a very light rod. That was not Tom's argument or mine. As I mentioned on an earlier post. I fished for two days on two different spin rods. Both 7' ML fast action. The reels were even different sizes and I could not tell a difference in either of those let alone a "huge" difference. If I were blind folded I would never be able to accu

Mark, I learned a lot from the thread. Mostly that nobody knows for sure. Same with spinning or not spining. I do believe that a very good angler could possibly detect to a very small degree if there was 2gms difference in a weig

Thanks Joe! One thing you mentioned in your post was, "the majority of anglers would not be able to tell a difference." That's my argument. I agree with you. Tom said even to an avg. angler there will be a "huge" difference in very little (2gms) added weight. I believe it was Nash that said, "it makes a world of difference." I just got home from a short fishing trip.

Yesterday I went over some of the comments on an old thread on spine or not spine. After reading the ongoing comments on this thread on weight, I get a strong feeling that the non spiners and weight reducers believe they build a very superior rod than the spiners and those who build top quality but don't obsess (yes, I said it) over micro grams of weight.

Joe Vanoffsen...that's some deep s&%@. Too deep for me. I made a comment earlier about paint on a rod. I said I can grasp that a material totally covering the entire blank could decrease sensitivity because the material is between the blank and the users hand. I was told, no...its weight that decreases the sensitivity. What is your take on a covering and sensitivity? Tom and others are adam

Nash, one comment on your Moto theory. It's true that bikes are being made to be lighter but it doesn't matter how light a bike is if there isn't a good rider on the seat. A good rider on a heavier bike will smoke a bad rider on a light bike. The same goes for cyclists. I biked for a long time...still do just not as fast and far. people spend several thousand dollars on lighter bikes thinking th

Roger, why does the sensitivity decrease if the entire rod is "covered" in epoxy? Because there is a layer of material between the angler and the blank? Why then, does a layer of paint "covering" the blank not produce in a very, very less degree the same thing? Tom said covering the blank with a material only changes performance due to weight. How can people say that? you can'

No Chris, it really doesn't matter at all to me what others do. I would hope people do what they believe is best not only in rod building but in all parts of life. However, if someone says something that is confusing to me then I most likely will ask why and try to find an answer. I would love to see a true study done where any angler regardless of skill level could determine the performance of a

Of course it's the color Mike! Pinks are lighter..blues are heavier. I can think the paint coating hardened and completely covering the blank could possibly change the stiffness or flexibility. paint is a hardened layer with no purpose other than color. I don't know that paint can change the physical properties of a blank but I can grasp that more then...once again....2 grams of weight evenly and

Tom, I can wrap my brain around the paint concept but not because of weight. If a blank is totally covered/wrapped in a substance I can understand the blank/rod responding different but not due to the extra weight. More of an "extra' layer with no real purpose.

Demartini. Ciao amico." Feels good to me." Exactly! I Like my rods to look good, be crisp and clean and feel good. All but one of my builds performed great. The one that didn't was a 3wt. fly blank that I built into a spin rod. It was just way too soft for my liking. I believe in Peter Pan and the 7 dwarfs as much as I believe that 2 grams of weight evenly distributed along the rod wi

Sorry Tom, I am such a non believer, right now I have no desire to spend my time even trying your test. I build only with high end components and I never wrap more than 1/8th inch past the guide foot. Nash mentioned 90% wrap an inch or two past the guide foot....why? I can see that adding weight but that's not why I don't do it. I just like shorter wraps. I figure if something is not broke, don't

Tom..as I have suggested previously, how many people will be able to determine the lighter difference. I have no idea what you all are talking about on the 3 previous posts but you mention a "slight difference." Previously you and other posters have referred to the weight difference as "huge." Common sense seems to tell me such a slight difference distributed evenly on a rod w

Sorry Phil if that was unkind. It was never meant to be. I have learned a long time ago not to allow myself to be offended. If someone calls me an idiot or butthead or other...I usually laugh and then ask why. A man who I despise said at least one thing good. Many years a go Brigham Young said, "a man who takes offense when it wasn't intended is a fool. Also, a man who takes offense even whe

HAHAHA! Phil, that's why I don't even consider weight reduction...I don't have a gym membership. With the savings from a membership, I can buy more rod building supplies. My comment on a study would be a smart idea (IMO). Those of you who swear by weight reduction = better performance should be all over it. Might get you published even. Another of my opinions ( I have a lot of em) is that the we

No Tom, the thread wasn't about a heavy hook keeper. My initial question was meant to mean cumulative weight in general. This is a study I'd be real interested in seeing done. It would take some time but not much $. If a person were to build 2 rods on the exact blanks but on one have it weigh two grams more evenly distributed. Then have 50 beginners try both rods and determine the rod they liked

Adding a 2 gram hook keeper will make a difference anyone can fill or adding 2 grams evenly throughout the rod will add a difference anyone can feel? I have believe adding 2 grams just on the tip top will make a difference. I don't need to try a 2 gram hook keeper....I won't feel it.

Tom, adding 2 grams of weight to a single area...especially the tip top is no where near the same as an evenly distributed 2 grams of weight. I will admit, I could probably tell the difference especially on a light rod. Do the same to a heavy sea rod and a person would notice it less. Here's an idea...what if I added a 2 gram hook keeper? How much would that change performance? I can understand t

Seriously Phil, lifting weights was my suggestion for those who seemed so obsessed with weight reduction. I really thought if anglers had to obsess and stress with even grams of weight...perhaps they needed to spend some some in the gym. Now I realize it was a different reason....performance. I am still a high end believer that the novice or avg. fisherman could not tell a difference in a gram or

David, weight isn't even in the equation for me when building. I never know how much anything (including the blank) weighs. I don't care. I use top components and that's what I like. I learned something on this thread though...that the weight of a rod isn't the issue due to fatigue of casting but instead, how the rod performs. I still say I wouldn't be able to tell a HUGE difference with a minima

At this point in my life I am in agreement with David and his post above. Tom, I can't say that you're wrong about trying different guides and noticing a difference unless I tried it. I highly doubt I could tell a difference in more or less grains or grams although I could most likely feel a difference in a few ounces which I don't believe you are talking about. I feel the weight thing has gotte

Tom, will saving weight make a huge difference to the average person or just to an individual who fishes every day? I fish a lot but do not consider myself an expert fisherman. I have only been able to tell very slight differences in different rods. If I am fishing with 2 different ML spin rods, it would be hard for me to tell the differences. Of course I could tell the difference in fishing a M

OK, I can understand going light to help with the sensitivity and responsiveness of the blank. I can't understand going light just so the rod isn't too heavy. How much weight can you save on a rod? I can fish with a pound rod as long as I can fish with a half a pound rod. Thanks.
