Great. That is what we wanted to know. Tension is a bit of an issue... I think we will just use bobbins instead of the normal tensioning device. Thank you, Gib

Hello everyone, I'd like to get educated about wrapping tip top guides. In the past, we haven't wrapped them because they were glued on, and I assume that was ok? But my son wants to wrap the tip top for the rod he is working on now. We have lots of questions about how to do it correctly... but instead of asking them all and many not being necessary, I'd like to hear from the community what

I made a similar chart in excel awhile back. For me, I easily get tripped reading the measurements in simplest form. So the format of this chart helps me immensely. After seeing the guides listed here, I went back and added millimeters to it. For anyone interested, you can see it here: [1drv.ms] Everything is formatted to print off nice and neat on one page. The first column shows what numera

If the shim is more than a few turns of the drywall tape, once you are at the point of applying epoxy, you can unwind the drywall tape and then start to apply the epoxy as you re-wrap the shim. I read that this technique helps ensure that epoxy makes it all the way through the shim from blank to the seat. Just something to consider... Best, Gib

I think the CCS is great. I have started a data base for listing the CCS data on blanks. You can see it here [1drv.ms] This system allows you to compare blanks! Apples to apples. Not builds to builds. The RDA information contained from a build could be useful, but that factors in the uniqueness of each build. I would think a rod builder would want to know the blank information more importantly

I will offer an opinion on the PTS. My son is currently building a new rod for himself and chose the PTS over the MVT. He had never tried either one before, and I thought he would choose the MVT (because he chose the Rainshadow blank and ALPS Grips), but he wanted the PTS. So that's what we got (with the Perfect Trim). It looks cool. It was easy to assemble. There is no direct blank contact, as t

Here is what I meant by the kit at mudhole: From there website: "This turnkey ice fishing rod building kit includes everything you need to build 3 different custom ice rods. From the fishing rod blanks, to the perfectly matched components and supplies, we have bundled everything you need in one convenient kit." it's $160. Not bad for 3 rods... plus supplies, tools, hand wrapper,

I believe the speedy thread puller sold by mudhole is made out of mono. Not 100% sure, but it looks like it. We bought those, and don't use them anymore. The line is too thick and seemed to make the wraps look not as tight as what they were before we used it. We now use braid as a pull through with a bead on the loop. The bead makes it easy to see/grab among everything that seems to clutter our a

Ken, I have the scissors from mudhole that you mention. We like them. No issues at all with them. If I were to get something else, it would be something that I can lay flat on a wrap and get a cut that is flush/almost flush to the wrap itself. The scissors overlap each other, so the closest they will cut to a wrap is the width from the bottom of the blade to the cutting edge. I would like t

I say go ahead and spend the money (especially on a wrapper, like the Renzetti)... If you like it, then you're set to go for a long time. If you don't like it, then email me. I might want to buy it from you. :) A little more seriously (although, I will buy a used Renzetti from you), I'm not that knowledgeable on building ice rods... but Mudhole has an all-in-one kit for just about any type of

Our method: We bought the CRB Guide Alignment & Reel Seat Spacer Tool. and it is handy. First thing we do is to determine the straightest axis that we will align everything on. Once found, we use a china marker to draw a line down most of the blank to easily identify this axis (I made a little jig that is a v-notch routed out of a small 1" x "2" x 3" piece of wood a

Hello everyone, We are making a build using the PTS reel seat for the first time. Interested to hear from those that have built a rod using that seat if they buffed the ends of the insert (the parts that do not show through the windows) to a water break free surface or not before they epoxied it to the seat? Thanks, Gib

One other thing I'll throw out there is, I'm willing to create a similar tool for guides if enough people are interested. Something that lists each guide and provides Inside Ring Diameter, overall height, length, and weight... plus any other metrics people are interested in. Let me know. Thanks, Gib

All, Here is the link to the spreadsheet with corrected numbers: [1drv.ms] A page should open and you can see and navigate through the workbook. Near the top right of the screen should be three dots [...] If you click on that, a new list should appear with a button to download the spreadsheet to your computer. Unless someone has a better way of disseminating the workbook as updates occu

We can put in discontinued stuff. That may help with the "comparison" tool that I'm trying to incorporate into the spreadsheet.

Ok. In the interests of sharing this sooner vs later, I have only built in limited filtering capability (the basic filter on excel). As people use the spreadsheet, hopefully they will recommend things to me that they would like to see or have the capability to do. Hopefully, you have, at least, a basic understanding of excel and how to navigate in it, but please feel free to email me with prob

Yes! Let me explain what I have right now. For a given blank I have the following information: 1. Type of report (is the information from a "Manufacturer", a "Supplier" if they ever provide it, or a "3rd Party" like a rod builder, etc.? Intent is to provide info on who gave the numbers and how it compares to other entries of the same blank from different sources. 2

I have started a new thread for a "database" of CCS info for non fly rods. I am listing the IP in grams vs ERNs or Grains. But the spreadsheet does have a calculator. It displays ERN, Cents, Grains, & Grams. You can input any one of those numbers and the other three will be calculated for you. Geoff, I think it would be useful to have the IP and AA information of a blank just lik

Hello everyone, So.... I have taken the initiative and started a new CCS database (I say database, but it's really a spreadsheet since everything is done in MS Excel) for blanks which are not meant for fly fishing. I don't have much experience with many different blank types and manufacturers, and I would like to have some source of quantitative data to help compare different blanks. Right

We have bought a fair amount of CRB equipment over the past two years, because Mudhole was the only source for supplies and tools that we knew of when we just started out and the CRB equipment was what they recommended or came with the original kit we purchased. Overall, I'd say the CRB stuff is fine--especially for someone just starting out. I mean, it is better than nothing, and it will certain

Hello everyone, Does anyone know the formula used to calculate ERNs in the Common Sense System? The Rosetta Stone Chart only goes up to an ERN of 16.0. I'm asking because I noticed that PacBay lists the IP for some blanks in grams, while NFC lists the IP for their blanks in ERNs. I was wanting to compare the numbers but didn't have a method to convert Grams to ERN and vice versa above an ER
