Hello everyone, I want to make sure I understand the concept of guide placement. I have read the library articles and numerous threads here on the topic, but sometimes it takes numerous tries before I fully get something. All of this relates to a casting set up. In the articles regarding static testing, they say to flex the blank under a big load and adjust guide placements so that the

Hello everyone, Even though this is a question Tom could answer, I wanted to put it on the board in case anyone else had an opinion that wanted to weigh in. We started a subscription to RodMaker this year, and we have some back issues as well. For about $350, we could purchase the two CDs that have Volumes 2 -12 and all the individual issues from Volumes 13 - 19 that we do not already h

I didn't mean to imply that the KG top was going away! :) I want to know if the Titanium Alconite version (ring size 5, tube size 5) is going away or where I can find one? Thanks!

I see on the Anglers Reaource site that the Areowana (KG) top is made with the Alconite size 5 ring with the size 5 tube, but do not see it available anywhere. Does anyone kmow if this particular item will be coming back, or has Fuji decided to limit that top size to SiC and Torzite rings only going forward? Thanks, Gib

I think what Tom should have said was, "Sure, you can get those characteristics with carbon but it makes no CENTS to do it." !! ;)

I will throw in my $0.02 here: First off: there is a nice 3 part series of articles in RodMaker Magazine from 2005 (Volume 8; Issues 3, 4, & 5) that go over pricing custom rods. If you don't have those issues, I believe Tom is having a sale on buying the back issues of RodMaker right now of $5 / magazine if you get 3 or more. Better yet... if you go to the ICRBE in about a month, you can

All very good points. I appreciate the feedback. I do agree that the CSS is interesting. I guess in all my earlier ramblings, one point was misunderstood and another was left out. I'm not teaching the CSS to my son right now. It is good for me to read and learn more about "things" since we are new to the trade. Maybe one day we can talk about some of its tenets. But when we have fin

I'm trying to be aware of how much "academic" learning goes on. I want him to stay excited about this activity so I usually try and bring something up when he is struggling or when he is working on something

We have them both. It would be interesting if you have the same or similar thoughts as me.

Hello Everyone, Over the past week, my son (with some help from me) completed his 5th rod. Each one is done a little bit better, a little bit nicer, and a little bit faster. I have been reading a fair amount about rod building, blanks, etc. When my son is working on a build, and I see an opportunity to pass on some of the info I have read, we will take a break and go over that article or you t

I would think that too. We have the CRB wrapper from mudhole, and it has a piece that allows some backwards movement. We like that aspect of it a lot, but it doesn't seem that any other commercial made tensioners (other than Remzetti) have it. So it made me wonder if it wasn't that me ceasary once one became proficient at wrapping or if it difficult for other manufacturers to add that to their te

So cool that you build wrappers for veterans! I am a veteran myself and helping those that need help is something near and dear to me. I graduated from West Point, and a few of my classmates are very involved with wounded warriors etc. I think it is great that you do that!

Hello everyone, I'm trying to envision an optimal wrapper for my son. Not for right now (we will continue to use what we have now--the stuff from mudhole), but rather when his skills have progressed to a point where something different is warranted. A lot of my current ideas for an optimal wrapper come from the things we like or don't like about the tools we have now. Other ideas come from lo

I got the mudhole alignment / spacing tool and we are using it on a rod we are building now. I like it. It's easy to use and it wasn't expensive. One thing I did add was neon yellow mark at the front of the "sight" and a very small piece of plastic painted orange at the other end. This helps to make sure we are looking straight down the sight. The only other comment I will make about i

I would love to see / hear more about your guide alignment / mounting fixture. Aha! I just looked at your photo gallery and saw you rod securing fixture, along with the note that you aren't showing the alignment / mounting fixture because of potential commercial interest. It sounds cool. I hope you are successful with your endeavor!

Hello everyone! I am curious to know if other people here use some tip top adhesive to "stick" their guides in place before wrapping them, and what are the "cons," if any, of using such a technique? It sure would be nice to have an easy way to keep the guides in place while wrapping them, but I don't want to do anything that might otherwise "compromise" some aspec

Really? I wouldn't know for sure, but a guy at mudhole told me that the prokote has a "shelf life" once it is opened. He said something to the effect that once you've opened a container that you need to use everything in it within 4 months or so or it will go bad. Is that not the case?

Hello everyone, In earlier posts, I mentioned how I'm trying to learn about the rod building craft to help my 14 year old son, who has taken an interest in building custom rods. This has led me to asking some questions here, and I have received many helpful and beneficial responses from the nice people on the forum. I also have looked for helpful information from other sites on the internet as

Hello Everyone, I realize I might be asking a lot of questions, but I am sincerely trying to learn and understand what other, established rod builders do so I can better help my son without him having to devote too much time to finding stuff out and hurt his study time. I also want to try and develop his skills without having to over spend on items. So, earlier I asked about Guide "set
