Ralph,
Shooting heads? I'm guessing this is a fly fishing term? Around here it means your popping gophers. Can you explain for me?

William,
Fishsticks4U has really nice prices on the Rice, Mudhole has a wide assortment of several different brands. I've picked up a few things via @#$%&, but the best prices are just to the left here. I've got a monster spreadsheet here to prove it.
As you can tell from several of my posts I'm a threadaholic (hey, just coined a new word here, threadaholic. Fits me well). But I can honestl

Thank you all for your advice, I'm definitely going to try some of that Madeira. I've got a dealer close to me and maybe I can get some used spools fairly cheap just to test out.
Michael, I have to agree with you on the Rice metallics versus the Gudebrod. I've used both in my playing around and I must say that Rice feels better in my hands, lays better and just plain looks better. (A special t

Forgot to ask on something. For those that use the silk threads, what weight silk is normally used? I know that it comes in the 0 and letter sizes (i.e. 0, 00, A, etc.) but I've got to order a large bunch of silk for a tapestry here after the first of the year and figured since I was already having to order it I'd just add a touch for rod building and give it a wrap or 10. The thing is the silk I

Mike,
Been searching and searching. Lots of info there and did discover my thoughts on using the #40 were correct. That #60 stuff looks thinner than spider silk. But on the Madiera metallics, there are a lot of different sizes listed and 2 different types on it. Couldn't find that info in the search. Not yet anyway, I'm still plugging search words in there though.
You are definitely right o

I've figured out wrapping for guides and now I'm working on butt wraps (you do not wanna know what my hubby said about that). The deal here is that since wraps take a large amount of thread I am thinking of going out into A. Larger spools and B. Different lines of thread.
For my guides I'm going to stick to Rice as much as possible. That just feels better in my hands than Gudebrod. Even though

Bob, when you enrolled/joined up you picked a password. Or at least mine allowed me to. What ever you picked then is what you should use now. If not I think if you head to the "Log In" link, there is usually "I forgot my password" thing that will email it to you.
As for the server up there, it's one of the "habits" of software for guestbooks, bulletin boards, mess

Ken,
The place I got the FDA mica was They also have a polyester fine glitter that has no silcone coating on it like standard craft glitter. Tried that in some Perma Gloss and it distributes well, but you have to put on at least 2 coats without glitter to cover up the "bumps" it causes.
I decided on the FDA mica for use mainly because it's a "purer" form, doesn't have

First, someone went and changed the board on me while I was reading and playing around. I like it!
I have discovered that micas make great pigments to both 1 and 2 part rod finish. You've got to keep it stirred up or it will settle, but WOW, it gives it a shimmer. Works best on grey or dark colored blanks instead of light colored ones but I'm going to try again on a piece of white blank I hav

Gig 'em Aggies!!! And I'm about 35 miles east of Austin. I'm learning as I go and this board has become a life line to me.
Keep me posted on whether there is a Texas Get-together. I'll be there with bells on.
