William I am with Tom on this one. By the way Tim I used to use 5 min epoxy on the tip tops but I also melted the tip top on one of my favorite rods . I continued to use the five minute until a friend of mine stepped on a top and pretty much crushed the ring. I got the bright idea to use a pot of boiling water to heat the top well it is kind of hard to turn a 7 ft. rod upside down and put the t

Tom I have tried Dupli Color clear coat(an automotive spray available at auto part stores) and it seems to work well.I built a rod for may brother and he at first wanted the rod to have matte finish. The rod was wrapped and finished ready to fish when he asked if we could make it gloss. I heard about the auto clear coat and discovered it has a flex property built in. I sparayed the rod after a l

Sam I recently finished a 11'6'' crappie rod for a guy. I used a Batson forecast 2005 spey rod 7 wt. I don't think he has used it yet but when he put it together and played with it he was very pleased. It seems to have some backbone and the tip is very sensitive.I will give him a call and see if he has baptized it yet.In my mind the way they use these crappie rods they are just glorified cane pol

I would guess there are as many ways of aligning guides as there are rodbuilders but after experimenting with a number of ways I have found this works for me. After determining and marking the guide placement I mount an old reel on the rod. Then I use a length of cord ( the kind used by carpenters to pull straight lines) with a small weight attached to one end. After glueing on and aligning the

John I'm not sure what CA dust is but in over 20 yrs building and finishing custom furniture I have found that and old t shirt well washed and dampened with toluene was the best thing for picking up sanding sealer dust. That dust is as fine as you can get I think and it is a constant battle to get it out of minute pores in wood between finishes. If you want to try toluene be sure to wear plastic

thanks guys I didn't know if may the double foot on the bottom of the bend might damage the blank. I figured it would only probably stiffen the rod a little. As I am in the same boat as Mike(retired) and I am a little traditional I like the look of double wraps and weight is not a problem.Time isn't either I will get to wrapping. Thanks again guys I just recently began building rods again after a

I know the answer is probably somewhere in the phorum but I cant seem to find it. I have lived and fished along the Texas coast all my life and as such I use casting rigs. I do not own a spinning rod. I am spiral wrapped a old rod I had that needed new guides and I put double footed guides on it. Looking around though I notice all the spinning rods use single footed guides. Is there a reason to

I have a request for a crappie rod 9 to 91/2 ft long. I don't know anything about crappie fishing. I think a fly rod blank might work. A very light spinning reel will be used on it. If anyone could maybe suggest a blank for me I would appreciate it. thanks

Hi Bil I also use the twist tie method. I rough space the guides then mount an old reel and run the line through the guides mount it in a jig I made and pull the tip down with a seperate line alittle way. Then position the guides in that area so the line from the reel mimics the curve of the blank. Pull the blank down a little more and position those guides etc until I have a full bend in the bla

Until about 3 months ago I hadn't built a rod since fiberglass was state of the art.Since then I have built 7 or 8 and rewrapped 5 or 6 of my own rods. One of my rewraps was an older rod that I have fished for years a 7' medium action fiberglass composit factory rod. It needed new guides anyway. After reading about spiral wraps and viewing a bunch of pics here I wrapped with one guide on a nine

I used decal connection for the first time recently and I cannot praise Jimi enough. Like Fred said he will probably call you anyway as he did me to straighten out my/ your order. I reaally am pleased with the decals and more importantly the people I built the rods for are tickled pink. Jimi also explained the necessary steps in appling the decals to me.Kept me from making beginner mistakes. Ag

I don't know about GA but in Texas you go to the county clerks office and file a DBA (doing business as) this ensures no one can use you business name but you. then you can file for a state sales tax certificate (number) then you can if you want open a business checking account. After the DBA and sales tax number are issued you then can apply for a Federal Tax ID number. If it is like it is here
