"I've done this a few times using steel wool"
Or Scotchbrite- both are quick and effective at dulling the finish without removing any of the finish. The finner the better, #000 or equivilant.

OK- total noobie here to the rod building thing. But I build a lot of other stuff with spines, and "we" have over-complicated it, and no one can seem to agree on proper spine orientation- nor has it really proven a benefit in the end. All for the purpose of marketing! Go figure!
I'm also not a noobie to fishing, and I see more benefit to spine orientation in some types of rods than I

I also build golf clubs (Reddog) and can tell you that I WOULDN'T heat the reel seat to remove it from the blank. TWO different animals!
Try some of the methods the rod builders here are suggesting- but don't use heat.

If you know the RPM you want to acheive at the chuck, you can figure out the correct pulley diameter. It may be a little hard for me to explain, being neither a math guy, or a writer- but let's try.
Let's say your motor RPM is 25, and you want to turn the chuck at 10RPM. Divide the motor RPM by the desired chuck RPM. In this case it's 2.5. So- you'd need a pulley 2 1/2 times as big. You can pl

I do a lot of painting, and finishing. Everything from cars, to golf club heads. The finishes range from two- part poly; basecoat/clear coat; to lacquers. It depends on the intended use of the fiished product.
The color sand and buff phase are the same with all three- but the relative hardness of the materials make some a quicker process to finish.
Once the finish is applied it is color san

"Nano technology" has hit the golf shaft manufacturing industry. I don't claim to know any about "nanotech," but I know a little about golf shafts. Fishing rod blanks and golf shafts are formed using the same methods, and similar if not identical materials.
As for the nano technology applied to golf shafts (and other sporting goods), I've not been able to determine if it's

Mucho thanks for the responses. I have finally searched (all) the sponsor sites, and have come up with some blanks that meet the criteria. Intially all I was seeing were expensive blanks, and getting discouraged. Done deal now- thanks again! Oh yeah- I'l be back with more questions later!

Last rod I built was probably thirty years ago, and only the one. Not totally un-handy however as I've been building top quality golf clubs for about twenty five. Therefore I'm familiar with with spines, finishing, fitting, gluing, etc.And I have all the equipment which can be modified and converted for rod building use.
To the questions- For starters I'm looking for inexpensive blanks to sta
