One can make a handy adjustable guide holder out of pieces of broad rubber band and plastic tube by pulling the band inside the tube. E.g. fishing line can be used to pull the band inside the tube.

A checkerboard jig drawing. Designed to making 36, 30, 24, 20, 16 and 8 piece "wagon wheels". The model has a lid which compresses the ring and keeps it firmly in place while making a cut. The flat sides are machined so that the jig could be mounted to a bench better.
This is only a plan/sketch and I have not made the jig yet. It will be made of steel which should make a li

I have used a hairdryer alot and the problem with it truly is the dust particles. Recently I've started using just a regular lamp. The lightbulb gets hot enough to make the epoxy runny again and does not circulate air that much. Try it out. Though you might still need to bust the bubbles with lighter etc.

Sorry for that Tom. I edited a link there instead of the pic.
Thanks everyone for your encouraging words! :D I'm glad you find the idea usefull.
Todd: You can move the guides two different ways. You can loosen the houlder and so on or you can pull the guide off the blank and pull the guide and the band to a new place. No scratches - no hassle. ;)

Hi guys,
While static testing my current project I got frustrated about how clumsy pieces of silicon tubes and rubber bands e.g. are for mounting guides to a blank. This might be old news but I think I invented something - a simple, cheap and very functional little guide houlder.
You can make it out of broad rubber band and plastic tube. Just pull say a 2" piece of the rubber band insi

Josh - I think Mo means the new Fuji LSG "GUNSMOKE — S4™ STAINLESS STEEL FRAME Fly Guides" that comes all the way down to #3.5. If they would only come in titanium frames too...

Take care!

I'd go with regular single foots in size 1 or even 1/0 if those can be found.
Then the new Fuji LSG's in sizes smaller than #5 might be an option too. I wonder why they don't have those as TLSG's.?
As a tip top I might concider American Tackle's zirconia fly tops. They are roughly half the weight of normal chrome tip tops and almost as light as Recoil tip tops according to my weighings.

14. Re: sanding burl
Most people seems to stop sanding cork at 400 grit. I give the final touch by sanding with 1000-1200 grit watersandpaper and water naturally. This is carried out using longitudal strokes by hand and I think that the result is very nice. On a regular cork the result is so smooth that you can barely put down your rod after that. ;) Have not tried that on burl yet though. Just my 2 cents.

I think that they are good stuff. Very light, hardy and durable. One of the sweetest casting single hander that I've built has #2 Recoil RSF runners and Recoil RTTUL tip top. According to my weighings Recoils are ~half the weight of regular chrome snakes or single foots.

Martin - How about CTS blanks that Andy Dear from Lamar distributes. They should be spectacular blanks.

Very nice handle Stan! Simplicity can be beautiful and I think this a perfect example of that. I especially like the effect of the lighter and darker blotchy "Lego" texture. When you look at the thumbnail it almost looks as if it is a really low resolution picture that you need to look from a distance. And then you get the impression of light reflected to the handle from a wavy water su

Nice topic! :D Especially since the "Reel Santa Clause" or should I say Father Christmass comes from a fell called Korvatunturi located in Finland. ;) Check it out:
Anyways I guess I've been a good boy this year - Santa brought me a CPW power wrapper with a 4rpm dryer and a tail stock! :D How did Santa know that I wanted that? Well he is the Man! :D

I dunno about he Sweden but here in Finland it's getting warm again. Yesterday we had 14F but today it's getting close to 30F.

This time the CPW's wrappers cought my eye. Compared to many other wrappers out there they seem to be very versatile and easily updated with e.g. a lathe type chuck and a tail stock. In the long run I guess that this is not a bad thing. How about the quality of the products?
I've been especially drooling about the CPW Lathe Type Wrapping Machine with4 RPM Drying Motor. Would it be enough for t

Thank you very much everyone for your input! :D
Some time ago I noticed that the PacBay deal is valid only in the US. Since I am from Finland it's a bit out of my reach - as is unfortunately the Charlotte show too. ;) Otherwise I would have been there.
However I found out that Fishsticks4u has the (same) Forecast wrapper on a similar sale deal too. Thus I've contacted them.
Cheers!

IME if one does not glue the check into place and thus block the finish from getting "inside" the check the finish gets wicked or sucked in by the capillar force and eventually also comes out of the base of the check making the result to be messy.

Long enough I've been using temporary cardboard box ;) or not so well thought out home made wrapping stands. The offer campaign that Pacific Bay has on their power wrapper RW-3L + the free dryer cought my eye. Now I'd like gather some opinions about the quality, characteristics etc. of the wrapper. Any input is very much welcome. Also opinions on other similar wrappers compared to the PacBay are

Thanks for your input also Bill! I think I'll give your method a go on some of my projets in the future - just ordered the guides for the current rod. ;)

Custom rod building here in Finland is very very small eventhough there are some gifted builders like Antti Kymäläinen around. It is really difficult to sell a custom built rod of any kind - especially if one wants to sell it even for a small profit to cover the building process not to mention the components. I've not started a business in this - just building for fun - but have tried a good fe

Thanks for the answer Emory - you got me convinced!
So I'll be using the #5.5 runners and one as a tip top. To reinforce the tip a bit should I perhaps wrap the tip top guide in using a slightly longer wrap (but not too long making it heavy ofcourse)?
>Emory wrote: "...And yes you can use a 5.5 regular guide for a tip. In fact, it will weigh slightly less than the normal tip and te

Hello folks!
I'm in a process of building a Winston Boron IIx 5 weight 9' 4pc fly rod as a present for one nice lad. I want the rod to be as good as possible so I am going to put Fuji's Gold Cermet guides onto it - NO I did NOT win in the Lottery! ;)
So far the set of guides that I'm planning to put into the rod has #6 T1GG as runners and T1LGT as a tip top. Thought I am not too happy about
