I looked at the Chuck and Duck rods and that handle looks like what I need. Now I need to figure out how to make one. I'm a fly rodder, time to go searching. Thanks for the help. It is much appreciated.

I have been asked by my father to build him a rod that he can use his shakespeare model 1810 on. I have tried to research what type of handle it came with but could not find any information. The reel is a cross between a closed face and a spin reel. It has a closed face and you hold the line with your finger and snap back the handle to "open" up the reel for casting. The big problem is

I have tried many finishes, spay on clearcoat, Tru Oil, Spar Varninsh and I still can't seem to fins one that works well for wood handles. They are all so soft and don't get a really good shine. What I have found that words well is automotive spray clear coat, my friend and I are painting a car and I thought, "Why not." It works really well and is really hard. The problem is, it is r

Just a suggestion: If you want a thread to stop then lock it and give a reason or more information, this will allow people to have the information that you say I lack. Deleting cold seems shady but maybe that is just the way I see it.

It is a shame when a thread gets deleted, especially a thread that has the potential benefit of saving users of this site an extreme headache. If a thread is detrimental to a sponsor then maybe the site shouldn’t be associated with a company that can't seam to fulfill their orders. I do realize that it takes money to maintain a site like this but it seams a shame that the sponsors take presid

Has anyone tried out these rods? I really like the feel of the old slow graphite (i.e., early Winston graphite) and was curious if these are similar.

Does anyone have any CCS data on older Winstons? Like in the >10,000 serial number range. I suspect that the ones on there are not in that range. Winston's early graphite was made by G. Loomis and I really like the action of the early rods and would like to find some blanks that are comparable.

I'm new to working with wood and I just turned out my fourth handle for a fly rod on my lathe and was wondering what people use to get that really high gloss look on reel seats? Would it be a good idea to do this on a wood handle? I have been using Tru Oil and it just isn't all that glossy.

I always have a hard time getting the rat tail to fit into the chuck right so I took a hack saw to it and cut it off. It now works perfectly.

I haven't had any problems turning it but I had the dark color as an end piece and when I bored it out it split on me. Other than that it turns well.

I found the rubber cap at Ace Hardware in the plumbing section. They are called Quick Caps. I had the epoxy and didn't need a entire can of the PVC cement. But to each their own.

I just did it for the first time yesterday. I cut some rings out of a wood block then drilled the. I clamped them up with the cork rings and put it on the lathe. I used a gouge to rough out the size of the wood and sanded the cork to size. I then sanded the whole thing together. I had to spend more time on the wood and very precise in sandpaper placement but it turned out very well.

Thanks. Those look fine, better than mine but it just means more when you make them yourself.

I found an alternative to the threaded male PVC cap and built some cases. I thought I would share what I did because it was cheaper that an aluminum case. The cheapest aluminum tube that I could find was $19.99 and then you had to add shipping to that, These cases cost me about $10 each. Materials: Grey PVC tubing PVC End Cap Black rubber cap (the ones I bought had hose clamps with them) P

I turned a handle out of Ziricote and put a coat of Tru Oil on it. It will not dry! I have read that some woods are too oily for some finishes. Any of you wood guys know what I should put on it to get a nice finish?

I'm am currently using exotic woods. I just found some places with pen blanks that are better than the wood that I am getting now. They also have some alternative materials that look promising but they may be to small.

Thanks for the reply, how are you drilling out your reel seats? I'm having a hard time getting the hole centered all the way through

Anyone know the minimum size of a blank you can use to turn fly reel seat inserts? I have found some great material but is 5/8 x 5/8 to small?

I just found some PVC cases offered by LL Bean for $15.00 plus shipping. The caps snap on. You can search for them or email me for the link.

Thank you, that was the same thing I was thinking about doing. I just wanted to make them look a little more elegant. It is that screw in top that I am having a problem with. Anyone know how to thread PVC or ABS?

I was thinking of making a rod case out of PVC. I would glue a cap on one end but what about the other end? I know about the screw in male plugs but they look bulky and unattractive. Anyone have any other ideas?

I had a handle put on by Charlie Reading a local rod builder and he put on a stained Carnauba based wax. I just called him and he told me it was called Indian Sand. Do a quick search in google for Carnauba Indian Sand and you will find it. It turned out great.
