I also have taken the advice of this board, I take a foam paintbrush and remove it from it's handle. Then I cut a small hole in the brush and soak it with permagloss. I then put the blank in the small hole and pass it up and down the blank.

I am building a bamboo rod from a Thramer blank and the cane is a little dark. The I turned a handle out of some high grade cork and some green burl. It looks a little light in contrast to the dark cane. Does anyone know of a way to darken the cork?

It looks a though it is possible. I am going to have to give it a try. I have a couple of calls into Andy, I think he must be swamped. Any comments and what the best mandrel from him would be? Like what would be the most used size?

A couple of days ago I read where someone was using a Grizzly Hobby Lathe to turn reel seats. It sounded feasible and I went and purchased one. In another thread I asked about what tools I should use and someone replied that I shouldn't be turning wood with this lathe. My question is... Does anyone turn wood on this lathe? I would like to know before I invest more money into tools.

I just did the same thing although with a different paint. I coated it with U-40 Perma Gloss. I used a foam brush with a small hole cut in it, soaked with the gloss. I ran it up then down the rod and left to sit for an hour. I then put on another coat, three in all. I had to wait about two days to wrap the guides, I tried earlier but the thread was biting into the finish.

I just received my Grizzly hobby lathe and was wondering what tools (I guess they are called chisels) I should get to turn reel seats and handles. I have never used a lathe so please be specific. Thanks

I use the same spatulas and I use surface tension instead of touching the thread. Then I wait a few minutes before leveling. I'm new though so take it with a grain of salt.

Great, thanks for all the advice. I may be trying this in the near future. Ordered a Grizzly hobby lathe and hope to try my hand at turning my own wood handles.

Thanks for the link. I have made a similar lathe with a drill but without the bearring. It gave me an idea to try.

I really like how this rod is wrapped, is it called a swelled butt? I was wondering if anyone could share the technique with me, do you just build up the thread, or is something under there? ..·`·. ><(((((º> ..·`·. ><(((((º> ..·`·. ><(((((º> (saw this on another forum, to good to pass up)

Thanks for the suggestions I will take a look. I built a lathe for turning cork out of a drill and was wondering if anyone knows if I could turn wood handles on it using a Dremel tool instead of chisels?

Novice question: I am interested in turning my own handles for a couple of rods that I am building, however, I don't want to shell out the $$ for a lathe. Anyone have any bright ideas for an alternative? Could it be done with a drill lathe?

Thought I would chime in, I found some great spatulas the other day. Mcdonalds coffee stirrers. They are perfect, and free.

Thanks, it was the allowing of ads that did the trick. John: A great looking site, well organized and aesthetically pleasing. I found the way that you categorized components by line weight. It makes it much easier for the beginner (me) to locate the correct size.

I ordered some cork the other day from one of the sponsors, I was not happy with it or with the price. For some reason the sponsors are all missing from my screen, this happening to anyone else? Can someone point me to a good source for cork rings?

I am a relatively inexperienced builder and I had the bright idea of refinishing an old South Bend fiberglass rod that I had sitting around in the garage. It has been a great learning experience and I think the only thing I have left to figure out is about the ferrules that I ordered for it. I ordered some American Tackle FSS Chrome Plated Brass Ferrules and have a couple of questions about them.

Thank you! Any tips on placing the guides in such a temporary manner and still allowing enough strength to load the butt section?

I have an old South Bend fiberglass rod. It is an 8' 9" HDH. I need to figure out guide placement. It has no guides on it now so I have no idea where to place them. Anyone know or can you point me in the right direction?
