RCLB 80 XL I have 2 for my personal use, and built 2 more for friends (who are super happy with the way it performs) Also have one SW967F, built it this year and use on my sturgeon trip in october. It is different rod, but was performing very good as well. If you fish from boat I would go with RCLB80XL. I have one with cord wrapped handle and Fuji heavy duty saltwater reel seat. Light and th

Roger, for some reason i cannot find your initial answer anymore. It has dissapeared somehow and i cannot see it. I did check prices for the pedal you have mentioned and unfortunately its too much of unjustifiable investments for me. I dont build tor money, its hobby for me which i do love. I will look in option of maybe getting used pedal and do conversion you are talkng about. I still want

I read numerous posts regarding using dc motor for wrapping, and open to that idea as well. However, i cannot find any information on foot pedal for use with dc motor. Anyone knows where i can find one? I have manual speed controller for 24v dc motor, from 1 to 100 rpm, which will be used for finishing and drying. If i can add foot pedal to it i can use it for wrapping

I am in a process of rebuilding my homemade wrapper, and at some point i decided to go ahead with adding a sewing machine motor to it. I have a motor and pedal, its 5000 rpm motor. I know i need to add rheostat or speed controller to slow it down to wrapping speed, but not sure which one to buy and how exactly do it to make it work. I am looking at something like this Will it work? I will b

Mr. Scurtu, My understanding was that OP was inquiring about the cause of failure rather then looking for a replacement of failed blank.

Other thing to keep in mind, if you want to hide your transition from one section yo another at thr ferrule joint . You can make it almost invisible when rod is assembled, common practice here in Canada wirh long centerpin rods. Use nylon thread of the same color as blank, nylon with no color preservative. Do your ferrule wrap as long as you need or want. Then just cover with layers of epoxy of y

I will try to get it for you when i get home. I built a petsonal rod which is also cts 11.6 but 8-12 line. Handle size sounds the same, guide size same. Rod performs great. I assume you are also using centerpin reel as i do. I built the rod with minima match guides transition to minima fly, but if are planning to use this tod in winter use high frames guides as runners instead. I use mine mostly

Just checked, i do have both, there is a slight difference when you compare them close side by side, other then that hard to tell, looked at few of my rods where i used both types of guides on the same rod ( my own rods, did not want to spend any extra money to get same type of guides). If you dont know you cannot tell the difference, running guides looks just a bit different then reduction, if y

I always mix just 1/2 cc of each part. 1 cc total. Never had any problems with it drying tacky. It is just enough to cover guides on a rod in most cases. If i need to do larger rod on decal area i just mix another cup.

Looks like my set up is total opposite to what is pictured. Which makes me think that it is just personal prefference. I rotate blank away from me clockwise. Thread carriage and tensioners positioned in front of set up under a blank. For tensioner I used metal 1/4" rod, paper clamps and springs, and for carriage assembly I used drawer slider. Nothing fancy.

Sam, try both ways and see what you like better. I personally use one sacrificial. I also do not keep tension the same on the outerwrap, I have some spots with normal tension and some with very little tension. Then move it arround prior applying either cp or epoxy. Not sure if it change final look though, since other people keep normal tension and get nice results too. The beauty of it is there

""I use NCP (no colour preserver) thread for the Tiger colour thread because I think CP causes problems when I remove the sacrificial thread. "" Garry, if you decide to use nylon thread apply CP, and remove sacrificial thread right after cp has been applied when everything is still wet. Do not let it get dry, and you would have zero issues with thread. Then let it dry and f

I have line twisting with minima top, and not UL rod, its actually MH rod. Its more like last few feet of line get "coils", not really twist. And yes, its only with minima top. Was using mono, p line cx or cxx, cannot remember. Never buthered me though, since i usually cut few feet of line after day of fishing anyway. Someone told me its not a tip top problem, but more of a line problem

It is a common practice on centerpin float rods. These rods are 12 ft and longer, most of the times, 13 or 13.6 are most common. Reason is to keep the line in line with rest of the guides, which are high frame spinning guides. It is needed here in Canada for winter or cold weather to decrease line freeze ups. Also helps with cosmetics, everything looks nicer. I never used locking wraps and never

Ok, I guess i got the idea. Now, next question. What is the difference between graphite tubing from Batson and graphite sold by Mudhole, other then price point. Batson material seems to be almost double in price. As Tom stated, there are more then one type of graphite. Are they that much different? I am planning to build the rod for myself using this new (for me) type of handle and want to le

Tubing handle material .980 OD - Graphite, texalium, or kevlar? What are the differences between them? Is there any advantage of using one over another? What would you recomend for a rod which will be mostly used for casting lures, but ocassionally used in rodholders for bait fishing? Is any material better and more durable then other or is just simply a meter of cosmetics/price? Thank you

Just returned from this year's sturgeon trip and now have one of my friends wanting me to build a rod for him. He used one of my backup RCLB80XL rods built as spinning rod and was impressed how it handled fish he caught, some of them 50 - 55 lbs. We are fishing from boat, using 3-4 oz pyramid sinkers and worms as a bait. Line is 30 lbs mono or 50-60 lbs braid. Now, while he really liked te rod, h

I used metallic pink and black once. Wanted metallic pink as accent colour. Did not get the desired result. Outer thread is the colour you would get, and base is a contrast. Yellow for the base would not do much, i would use white ncp instead. Black and white ncp for base and yellow as outer thread. Sucrificial does not matter, use any unwanted colour in your stock. But to get the metallic accent

I had 14 high frame guides on it, no tip top, runners size 8 (for winter fishing). Will try to put new guides with same spacing and see. But most likely like it has been suggested will go ahead with many guides as originally planned. I guess i would get first hand experience and if it s not good redo it back to original.

Hey guys. Another question. I m rebuilding StCroix Avid 13 ft float rod to spiral wrap to be used with low profile baitcaster. Rod was my own salmon/steelhead rod for years, rebuilt from factory rod. I had new handle with wood inserts and new cork, and centerpin setup on it. Now decided to try something different, i.e. Baitcaster reel and spiral. All been stripped and refinished, but when i ran s

Thank you guys. It does not bug me at all, at least on this rod. I do know what to do to correct, but will leave it as is, most likely. My question was more "in general", what would be an adverse effect of misalignment guides on spinning rod, if any. From what i understood from your responses, it is not much important. Just cosmetics, i guess?

I just built a rod for my daughter and after the fact i did notice that reel foot and guides are about 10 degrees off line. Reel to left side and guides to the right. it is totally my error and i know what i did wrong and how to correct the issue. But my question is- how really necessary is the staight line allignment for reel seat and guides? What will be effected ? In this case its not big

None. Just your own breath, for about 30-40 sec per guide. Not fastest, but works. Absolutely no chance to ruin your wraps. I had bad experience with both heat gun and flame.

John, what tape are you talking about? That sounds like a good idea. I will probably end up with buiding up some sort f transition and finishing with epoxy. Sort of epoxy ramp. But i have another identical rod build to do after this one. Still open to ideas for the second one. Will keep you updated what i end up with
