Berkley Series One rods were the first commercial rods to use split grip handles on their rods and that was probably close to 20 years ago.

Has anyone used one of these labelers with much luck as far as sticking to the blank, not lifting up after the finish has been applied, and holding up to the UV light? If so which is a good one to get. Thanks

A friend of mine wanted me to redo a Fenwick HMG flyrod someone built for him.The finish job was the worst I've everseen. It looked like the ice does on a lake when the wind piles it up.I tried scraping it off.Several thinners/solvents.Nothing seemed to work.I tried a little heat from a heat gun and the rod got soft and broke in two.
The guy understood and had me order a new kit to build for him.

I make up some nice short (42") rods for Perch fishing on Erie.Jann's Netcraft sells their 42" graphite blanks in 3 different actions for like 6 bucks a piece. They also handle a grapite Tennessee handle kit made for ice fishing rods.I've made up a couple using these handles and like them a lot.

Hello Mr. Kirkman. If you don't mind me asking. Why would you wipe the area first before scuffing and not after to remove the sanding residue and other contaniments?I would understand if you were using an oil-based solvent or does Isopropoyl Alcohol have the same issues? Thanks Joel I learn something here everyday.

I just built one of these last week.I scuffed up the blank with a Scotchbrite pad, wiped with alcohol and used Rod Bond.It seem to hold just fine.Joel

19. Nuking Rod Bond
Is it safe to nuke the Rod Bond resin in the microwave for a little bit.Mine is somewhat harder than it should be?Even when mixed up thoroughly I get little chunks of the resin that does'nt mix with the hardener. It sets up just fine and dries hard. Thanks Joel

I use a simple and cheap method to turn my own grips.I bought a tabletop drill press and a 3' piece of 1/4" steel rod (allthread without the threads).I cut the steel rod up into smaller lengths to be used for foregrips or reargrips.I then rub parrafin wax onto the steel rod prior to glueing up the rings.I use Titebond llll to glue up the rings, clamp them up,let dry overnight.
I then tighte

Try moving up to a bigger diameter reamer as you go along. This will keep your holes centered.

Try using a sanding block. This will apply even pressure when sanding.

Colbalt Blue trimmed with Goldenrod.I used this on a Matte blank but it might work ok on the dark Blue as well.

26. Burl Cork?
Is it alright to use Burl Cork as the last ring on a grip.I have rounded off the grip on both ends and have applied Cork Seal. The reason I ask was I found this statement on one of the sponsors sites
"Burl cork is an amalgam of dark cork particles, not a piece of true burl from a cork oak. As such, it makes a great accent within a grip, but should not be used as the last ring on either end

I just put together a couple of woven graphite reel seats. They were loose fitting as well.I thought about wrapping with some "E" thread to make for a tighter fit,but I used the Rod Bond only. The Rod Bond filled up the gap just fine,it does'nt run like regular two part epoxy.I clamped them up with C-clamps and let dry overnight.Isopropyl alcohol works fine for clean up.Joel

Try Titebond lll.It dries much faster. No gluelines.Easy cleanup and its waterproof.Joel

I have tried several. The one I solely use now is the Trondak U-40 brand. It gives me consistent results.I give it one generous coat and let it dry a couple days before finishing. The one thing I do is that I shake it up really good then I leave it sit about a 1/2 hour or so before using it.The bottle says to gently stir it,but I liked my results better after shaking it up-no tiny residue.Joel

One reason I glued it up off the rod was that I did up 4 of these reel seats at one time.Regular epoxy glue should work out just fine. These make for some sharp looking reel seats.Joel
