I will add these comments for you to think over. Gudebrod nylon thread is a twisted product. It is not as uniform as you may think. Even if you pack it and burnish it you may have an area of thread that is tightly twisted and and area that is less twisted. When you wrap it, it may be inconsistant and when applying your version of CP you may get uneven penetration. I use a fly bobbin when wr

Another product that works is 3M Imperial Hand Glaze - no wax or silicone. Not for matt finish though.

I have built a number of those same blanks last fall. Those built with the ceramic ring guides were as easy to balance the rod as the one with snakes. The ceramics seemed to cast smoother although the skill of the caster still influenced distance. Just remember to mic the line and knots you are using so it will pass through the guides you choose. If your e-mail was not hidden, I could offer m

Handled a 29 pound salmon with no trouble on the Salmon River in NY state this past fall. They were releasing water the entire five days I was there. Water was running 1750. The week before (you should have been here last week!) was 345.

Billy,
IMHO Get a portable Ott light or a knockoff with white light bulb. Very true color to outside.

Thx Russ & Keith. All the salmon steelhead rods I have built have been made for fishing the Salmon River in NY, and most were two-handers. I will evaluate the 6 wts available and give one a try. I'll let you two know how the customer likes the selection.
Regards and happy holidays,

Yes, Keith - was looking for a fly rod suggestion. I haven't built on any of the DC rods yet, but this will give me a chance to get started. It's hard to believe that only one blank fits the bill. Maybe every steelheader uses a specialty rod for their outings. I would have thought that someone out there has used an all around rod/blank for multi use

Ken

I have been asked to suggest & build a multi-piece travel rod to be used for steelhead and as an all around trout rod. I am asking the board for suggestions on a blank that I can use to fit this requirement.
Thx in advance,

For non-drying gel pen inscriptions try Krylon UV acrylic spray. Can be found at all arts and craft stores - about $6. A nice even coat and in 30 minutes you can apply finish. Used to use the older product without the UV additive. This also works.

So when was the last time you got someone to push you around a redfish flat all day? I'll bet that only happens on Walkers Bay Chronicles. Didn't have to push the boat once (eat your heart out Flip) but got a good soaking during the run to the "promised land" due to the boat handling. Got to bend my own rod, a sweet Winston custom 8 wt., a few times on some puppies (that's what us ya

Mike, If you have the jungle cock neck you can put use the shaft of the feather from the back, on the tip section, mounted on the ferrule, and the jungle cock nail on the butt. This give you a line and a dot, and uses the feathers in a natural way. Fly fishers love this.

Your Loop will fit. I would select the smaller as it will accomodate the blank.

I'll add one additional alternative. I am not familiar with the Okuma reels, but If the Okuma has a removeable foot, you can replace it with the foot of another reel that fits the seat. Sometimes you need to re-drill the hole pattern. The cosmetics may not be what you wanted but the result will work especially if the rod is complete. I have done this with early Redington reels using a Martin

For those of you interested in one European take on the CCS system , Magnus Angus wrote and article in Fly-Fishing and FlyTying Magazine - august 2005 issue and compares three rod results as part of the article. You can find it on the web site:

Many fine casters prefer the guides placed on the spine (seems to improve casting length) while others prefer them opposite the spine ( for fighting fish) Guide placement on a fly rod may benefit from either of these methods, so checking to see how the line path flows under stress may be slightly different for a fly rod with these two guide placement methods. Try both ways and test cast and see h

Try YLI nylon thread. Comes in black, gunsmoke gray and clear. Not as strong as rodbuilding nylon as it is single ply. Get it at any sewing store. It will just blend into black, matt gray or colored blanks (clear). I use it for repairs from time to time. Will work in your application on ferrules, just keep the tension up as you wind.

24. Speed finishing
Today I found out the effect of heat on epoxy open time. The heat wave has penetrated my shop and today I was challenged to speed finish the wraps with epoxy. With the heat and humidity the epoxy open time was about 1/2 what is is normally. But I was able to measure, mix, apply and level with a single application.........and I did it in a NY minute. How about that Billy V !!!!! Has anyone el
