A client has given me a 20 year old Thomas & Thomas blank to build on. It has a spigot to join the 2 pieces. When put together, there is about a 1/4" gap. Are you supposed to leave it and let it wear in, sand it down a bit to get the 2 pieces to butt together, or trim back the spigot to get them to butt together. Never did one of there before. Need all the help I can get.

2. Surf rod
My son-in-law, who is a Virginian, wants me to build him a surf rod. I live in the middle of the Canadian Rockies and know nothing about surf rods. My question is: how long is the rear grip on a 101/2 foot blank. Also, any help with approximate guide spacing would be really appreciated. I have built a number of fly rods, spinning and casting rods but this appears to be completely different. Oh ye

3. Split grip
I have a Tiger Eye 7 foot, medium-heavy action. I was wondering if I could make it with a split grip. It will be used mainly for walleye and pike, some bass. This will be my first split grip and I'm not sure if the blank is tough enough. If the blank isn't strong enough, please give me some ideas on a blank that is.

I'm in bad need of some advice. Can HT Metallic thread (Size "A") be used as the main guide wrap on a Rainshadow 1265 composite trolling/downrigging rod. I'm not sure that it is strong enough.
