Magnify the Problem

Maybe its so obvious that it goes unmentioned. But using a simple 10x magnifying glass to view threads and guide feet really tells the story. A guide foot that seems flat on the blank but isn't is revealed clearly under the magnifying glass - and what to correct become apparent. Using the magnifying glass to examine threads as they are being wound can reveal issues that should be dealt with before they become tuff to solve. And of course, there are those "fuzzies"! (At least you can really spot them under the magnifying glass - getting rid of them is another matter, sigh). Or is my need for a magnifying glass just a sign of my age and impending feebleness?

I am 28 years old and use the ol' mag glass. You are correct, it reveals more than I want it too. Another thing is to take the rod out into DIRECT sunlight before finishing. I have daylight bulbs over my bench, but nothing compares to the real thing. Reveals alot! Can't pack/burnish those threads very easily after applying a coat of finish!

Hey guy ,

Im 42 years old and have better than normal eye sight.

I own two good quality 10x loupes one is a folding pocket type and one is a bench type that you can wear like Col. Klink!

I bought the loupes for inspecting and working on the nibs of antique fountain pens. My wife also takes one when she goes to estate sales etc to check out jewelry.

As for using a loupe in rod building I find it very handy
for inspecting wraps when using very fine thread such as Gossamer to check for :over -wraps , stains ,gaps, etc.

my folding loupe hangs on my wrapping bench ready for use at all time.

If any one is interested in this great tool a good place to purchase over the net is www.kassoy.com

Happy wrapping "John"

I use the $60 mag/lamp from cabelas.

Its only a 3x so my work doesn't look as bad as it would on a 10x.

Its a nice compromise.
