I’ll be using an Iconoglass 7’6” 4wt to shoot a compact shooting head from the beach and river. Figured to use titanium guides for salt, but then I’m stuck between single foot and snakes. Specifically a guide setup to shoot line as far as possible, without going insert guides (aside from one stripper).
The OPST rods are built with snakes and I’d think they tailor to shooting line. But then I’ve read anecdotally that SF are what competition distance casters use, and sf prevents line sticking etc. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/24/2023 01:05AM by David Olsen. There are arguments in favor of both styles of guides, but in my opinion, either will work just fine. I would use single foot simply because there is half the wrapping to do and I expect the final wrap/guide combination will be a little lighter so recovery speed will be a little higher. . I've used both and have not seen any discernable difference in performance. Re: Guides Tailored to Shooting Head 4wt Build

Good deal Titanium SF from REC will be it. I’ll add the build with pictures once done since I have not seen an Iconoglass with single foots. Re: Guides Tailored to Shooting Head 4wt Build

ONe thing you might consider with SF guides is the locking loop to prevent any possibility of a guide foot pulling out. [www.rodbuilding.org] (It's in the library, see link above) Re: Guides Tailored to Shooting Head 4wt Build

I've done single foot and double foot snake. Can't say I notice any real difference. Re: Guides Tailored to Shooting Head 4wt Build

Spey rods are built differently than single hand rods, whether you use a WF line like you have or a DT will not change the guide system on your build. Factory rods now days are pretty evenly split on what guides they use, none of my G Loomis rods from as far back as the 90's have snake guides, every Sage I have ever handled does, they both work.
