Relationship between guides and reel size

When the subject of what reel size to match up with a particular rod comes up,it seems that I never get a definite answer. It’s always any different opinions. For example,I just picked up a Team Daiwa Surf Rod 10ft K guides,,and it’s super light,so of course I would love to have a really light reel on it. Obviously, the smaller the reel, the smaller spool diameter,,so what happens when you put too small a reel on a rod? I’m very confused on how you match things up.

I would try to choose the reel size that has adequate line capacity for what you're going to be fishing for. And keep in mind that as the line level drops on the spool, at least a couple things happen - casting distance is reduced and drag amount increases. So typically you'll want a reel large enough that your casts don't reduce line level on the spool by more than a little bit, nor do you continually stay deep into the spool when fighting a fish.

For a 10 foot surf rod i like reels in the 18-22 oz range for balance and the reels are typically in the 5500- 6500 in the Penn reel sizes and 5000-8000 sizes if you prefer Shimano . These size reels have more line capacity than any surfcaster will ever need especially if using braid and are exceptionally popular and work well with the overwhelming majority of surf rods from 9-11.5 feet .

Well I was originally thinking of a Slammer 5500,but when I had it in my hands and felt how heavy it is ( 22.4) oz,,it just felt so out of place on the rod.. I then looked at the Saragosa 6000 which is (16.2)oz,,,it was a huge difference.

Richard, I think maybe the reason you feel there are a lot of opinions on this subject is because we are talking about a "system" of components that work together. All the variables have to work together for the wow factor to kick in on the finished rod. The reel spool size, reel height off the blank and line choice will influence the component selection and position. A change in any of these variables can have an effect on performance, so logically, there are a lot of opinions.

The Penns will be heavier than Shimano's of equal size mainly because the Penns have a metal rotor and body where most shimano's have a graphite side plate and rotor which doesn't take away from their quality because i believe the Shimano's typically have the better internals . The Gosa is a great reel and a great fit for that specific rod , it's a stellar choice for the salt due to the simplicity of it's design.

Most Shimano's have a lot more parts but Shimano kept the Gosa simple & maintenance is absolute cake.

Well that certainly is a ringing endorsement! I am leaning towards it... Also,,the Daiwa rod I mentioned has one thing I do not like..the absence of a rubber butt cap..so my next question is,,can I buy one to fit over the butt end and maybe epoxy it on?

Well yes,I realize that ,but I don’t know the proper way to do it,,or where is best to get the cap,or how to measure for it etc...

If all your concerned about is where to purchase a buttcap and which one will fit my rod your in excellent shape , check out the sponsors to the left of the page . I never use glue for a buttcap , measure the diameter at the end of the rod and make a note of it then look for a buttcap that has an inner diameter that is a couple mill smaller and you will get a snug fit.

Hardware stores even Home Depot and the like will have rubber end caps that many find ideal to use as a buttcap instead of buying one from an online merchant .

So you just rely on a tight fit and not glue,,ok that makes sense,in case you have to replace it in future.

Well, thats the way i have always dealt with buttcaps , i have never had a buttcap even move let alone pop off the end of a rod , the fit is extremely snug . You have to really pull and twist to get it to come off and thats without any glue.

Your rod is a Daiwa , an American buttcap is risky , Fuji would be a safer bet .

Yes, i'm kidding , good luck to you and enjoy your holiday.
