Been reading about anti silicon wipes using acetone, IPA etc. but would like to get everyones opinion about a solvent as used in the auto spray shops.
Would it be too agressive? Where to buy it? Who sells it? Regards, Phil. Re: Anti Silicon Wipe

Do you have reason to believe anything on your rod has been compromised with silicone?

Yep silicone.

Fish eyes or bubble craters? When silicone is the culprit, it's rare to only have a few "fisheyes." Usually you get dozens if not hundreds.

Usually all is needed is to wipe The Blank before you begin work with Alcohol Dry well You may be getting it from your hands Or if you have anything in the finish room it will get into the air and all over your rod Car wax Furniture wax Bill - willierods.com Re: Anti Silicon Wipe

Phil
Acetone is not so good for you. If you have silicone contamination you got to find the source and eliminate it else you might be fighting fish eye for a long time. Plain rubbing alcohol, the 90% variety, is a solvent for about all common rod contaminates. Wash hands with soap and wipe with alcohol before beginning rod work. Do not use furniture wax or polish in the work area. Re: Anti Silicon Wipe

Using an alcohol wipe as a last step before wrapping and finishing is asking for problems rather than reliably solving them. IMHO Re: Anti Silicon Wipe

I wipe the blank down with simple green cleaner. It does a wonderful job of cleaning up any problems with the blank and the cleaners chemistry does not cause any issues with paint or finish or thread.

Wiping it off when you get it will not cause any problems either I don't and have not had any problems when finishing If the wife cleans furniture and you are finishing a rod that stuff will get in the air when you finish Bill - willierods.com Re: Anti Silicon Wipe

Managed to find a supplier here in the UK at last.
Seems any automotive degreaser may do the job although I'd rather use something supplied by a professional rod builder's recommendation. Philip Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
