Where to find Large Winding Checks
Posted by: David Ball (---.ec.res.rr.com)

--Hey guys,

I really do not want to build my own winding checks because it looks difficult to do. But I cannot find 22mm or larger winding checks anywhere. I have found them as large as 20. But they have to exist. I seen them on other surf rods with split grips.

If I find one then I can actually mold it. Does anyone know if someone sells winding check molds by any chance. Let me know. I can't finish my wife's surf rod till i find , or make an appropriate winding check.

Thanks

David

David -
Not really that difficult. Build up a 'thread ramp" from the foregrip as far out as you like on the rod blank (toward the tip). You can overwrap several layers of thread (even put in some nice trim bands) - when done epoxy just like a guide. You don't have to repeatedly cut the thread - you can "wrap it backwards" == just like a mistaken overwrap on a guide.

If you look in the pac bay catalog, they have salt water winding checks in sizes up to 31.5mm

If you look in the Alps catalog, they also have winding checks in sizes up to 28mm.

Check with vendors who carry Pac Bay and or Batson - Alps products.

Be safe

I should have been more clear. I can find rubber winding checks, what I need is plastic winding checks or metal. I am considering making my own molds but sounds like alot of head ache

he does not want Rubber
Seems he will HAVE TO make them or have some one make them for him
There are acrylic blocks that are 1 1/2" in size to make large ones -- If he has a lath

If you are having trouble with the mold, and you have access to a real lathe(not a rod building one) carbide tools cut aluminum readily and you can shape exactly what you want. You could cast from that or use as is or make it slightly larger and powder coat it.
