I just found out about custom rod building, and I have a few questions about how to get started.
The first question I have is there any advice you would give to a person building their own rod wrapper? I am more concerned with making a power wrapper/dryer. What kind of motor should I use for each? Is there a way to use one motor for both purposes? Next I was wondering if it were possible to reuse an old fishing rod I have laying around as my first blank? Could I just remove all the apoxy and eyes and start from there? If so, could I change a rod from spinning to casting and vise-versa? Thank you for any help! Jordan Re: New to rod building..

Rod Wrapper: Build a manual wrapper with an eye to powering the wrapper later if desired. One motor can power both a wrapper and dryer. Search for messages about DC gear motors.
First blank: Most definitely, a used blank can be used. By using a new guide train that is lighter and spaced correctly, you could see a marked improvement. This site is a great resource. Check the photo page as well as using the search function. You will learn lots. Chris Richer Iroquois ON Re: New to rod building..

For sure you can use an old rod for your first blank. Just make sure you clean it pretty thoroughly. Keep in mind that if you are switching from casting to spinning and vise versa, the guide spacing is going to be different than the original.

Wouldn't the change require cutting off the old reel seat and fore grip? Re: New to rod building..

Hello Randy.
Yes it would, it is kind of hard work, but you just strip the rod down to the blank and re-do it any way you like. Use the search tab when you get to something you need help with, just about anything you could ask has been answered on this message board at some time or another. If you can not find the answer to a question, just ask and someone will most likely have an answer for you. Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines. Welcome to the addiction. Bob, New Bern, NC.
