I have a Amerixan Tackle wrapper/dryer combo and the motor for the dryer is misfunctioning. When I spot the belt to it it keeps clicking back and forth between clockwise and counterclockwise, is there a way to fix it? I know the motors are cheap, it's the shipping that crushes me to get it from my supplier. It is the AmTac 7.5/9 RPM 3.8W motor. If it isn't possible to fix, any recommendations on replacement motors? I couldn't locate this exact one anywhere.

Edit: I should have added I have 4 rods I'm building right now and will need to apply finish soon...so there is some urgency to this.

Are you saying it switches back and forth between CW and CCW on its own?

Turn them by hand.
That way you don't have to wait and won't have pay the $7.00 shipping.
Divided by the four rods you will save $1.75 on each.

Chuck - yes that is what's happening. It doesn't do it when there is no drive belt attached, but when I attach a drive belt it starts doing it.

Steve - it looks like that's how I will need to do it. Problem is this is a side hobby for me so I just need to find time to babysit it for a couple hours.

do you have the drive belt threaded around all three pullys?

Nate.... as Todd mentioned... is it around all 3 pullys? the motor is designed to be able to reverse direction when enough tension is added to it. The drive belt should only be around the drying motor and the chuck pulley.

If it is around just the two and you are having problems please give me a call and we will take care of the issue asap

Nate on those types of motors if you grab them they will change direction. That being said if you have too much tension on your rod stand pulley it will or may do the same thing. When drying on my wrapper I leave the top roller down but not tightened by the wing nut. It only applies enough weight/tension to keep the rod in place.

And be sure the dryer motor pulley belt goes directly to the main pulley only.

Don and Todd - it is just around 2 pulleys.

some thing is binding on your dryer, find out what is causing it it could even be the dryer motor, old an dry ed out
service your rod dryer with some TLC see if it helps ,

Tom.... More than likely just wore out... it is not a new motor. They have several gears inside that wear out over time.

I can't be certain, but after speaking wit Don it would appear it's most likely a stripped gear.

I have the same problem with my Alps. I have to hold the chuck for about 5 seconds then turn the chuck half a revolution in the direction i want it to go.

""IAN"" it sounds to me like you should get a motor on hand so when it goes south you will have it on hand to to R & R the old one they are cheep I think

If you do have heavy loads, you can go with a different style motor.

Rather than using the inexpensive timer motors; you can go with one of the larger ac or dc motors.

This style motor will stand up to heavy loads and be a long term solution for your issue.
