Replacing the single foot guides on a fly rod. Going to
snake guides. My question is are the sizes equivalent? Is a size 3 single foot equal to a size 3 snake guide? Thanks Re: Single Foot to Snake Guides

I don't think so, I read somewhere some time ago, think it was on the Sage site, that you can use 2 sizes smaller snake guide if it will pass your connections/knots. I really have used it the other way around for the most part, looking at the Sage sizing chart and than adding 2 sizes for single foot guides. Edited 1 time(s). Netcraft has some sizing charts that are normally published in their catalog. While I wouldn't trust the electronic version for precision, even with a printout there may be some scaling issues, but with that said, I think you can get an idea of relative sizing from the images, and it appears Spencer's rule of thumb is about right.

There is a difference between manufactures.
For ex: Snakebrand is larger that REC recoils.- snake size for snake size. So one may come to conclusion that snakes are larger than SF. By my measurement there is about 18% more room to go through a snake mostly because of the "side-door" feature of the snakes. i.e. the empty space on the side of the snakes. But head on I really do not think there is a 2 size difference between snakes and SF unless you are talking about snakes vs ceramic or any other insert SF guides. Herb Edited 1 time(s). Kind of off topic, but if snakes are stronger and smoother, then why don't they use them on other rods? Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
