What is a good blank to use for building a rod for throwing frogs?

Chuck,

I just fished a Frog Rod for a client built on the new Rainshadow Immortal IMMC76XH and he is very please with it. It has an x-heavy power rating and can be used for frogs, flippin', alabama rigs, C/R. I was very impressed with the quality of the blank.

I would think blank choice would depend on whether or not the rod is going to be a dedicated frog rod, or if the rod was going to see other duties such as a heavy cover jig or Carolina rig rod.

If strictly a dedicated frog rod, then IMO the need for a high modulus blank would be pretty much non existent. Frog fishing can put a rod under some pretty substantial loads, with the rod in some not so optimal positions. Power and durability would be my first considerations. If the rod is going to be used for techniques that require sensitivity, then a higher modulus blank would probably be a better choice.

As far as Rainshadow blanks. I'd still consider myself new to rod building, and have only built on one Rainshadow blank. It wasn't an Immortal blank like Don mentioned, but it was a beautiful blank. And based on that one blank, I'll be building on many more of them in the future.

Check out the Hydra Frog blank as well. Designed by tournament fishermen to specifically address both walking and popping frogs. Blank is US made and comes in right about 2.35oz on average.

Its also outstanding for swimjigs and chatterbaits.
