Sabiki Rod

I have a request from one of my long time customers for a sabiki rod. I have no experience with these other than viewing the pictures online.

Are there kits or components available to build one? Any links to supplies, videos of how they are built, drawings, schematics, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Merrill Tackle used to sell the Sabiki blanks and tips at one time. Maybe Mudhole has some left from their recent buyout.

The Promar/Ahi Sabiki sticks are complete but still pretty basic. They would be really easy to dress up. That is if you are looking for a Sabiki stick where the smaller sabikis go inside the rod. Retail they are usually $60-$70, but can get them on the Fred Hall Show special for $50 and going by the booth gets you a couple sabikis to start. They come in 7 and 8 footers, but some people like kayakkers cut them down. Turners and Bass Pro have them if you want to swing by a shop and check them out to get an idea on what to build.

One thing to keep in mind, and you may want to ask your customer, what size sabikis they plan on using. Bigger sabikis won't fit inside the rod.

I have been using one for 10 years or so. They work great to keep those bait catchers from snagging on everything. They are very stiff and are usually fished with at least 20# test. There have been instances where a yellowtail, white seabass or halibut have hit the bait snagged on the gangion and become entangled in the sabiki and eventually landed.

Lance, I'll try calling Todd at Mudhole, thanks for the reminder about them picking up Merrick's inventory. Hopefully if any of that inventory was left, it didn't get tossed.

Don, thanks for the info, much appreciated, I give them a try and mention your name.

He wants to catch Great Lakes alewife and smelt as bait for trout and salmon. I believe the bait he wants to target and catch is in the 3"-5" range so im guessing the hooks will be pretty small.

Neither of us have any experience with this, but I remember seeing the components at Merrick and when I tried to search online all I can find are approaches using PVC and that's not going to work for this client. I was hoping to find a source for the basic blank, interline guide, and bell tip so I could just build from there to avoid having to strip a couple rods down to the blank.
