Guide and tip size for 30lb mono to 50lb braid knot?

Hello,
I am building a heavy surf spinning rod that will be used with 50 lb braid knotted to 30 or 40 lb mono. The knot must be able to pass through guides without issue. I am guessing someone here has experience with this. I am considering 12 or 16 tip and running guides. Is that going to work? Thank you, Tim Re: Guide and tip size for 30lb mono to 50lb braid knot?

10mm will work just fine. My tarpon builds feature 10mm top and running guides with 65# braid and 50# leader, no issue whatsoever. Re: Guide and tip size for 30lb mono to 50lb braid knot?

Thank you Jim.
That is much better having to use a 16! Tim Re: Guide and tip size for 30lb mono to 50lb braid knot?

I would trust my eyes before the internet. I would tie my favorite knot joining super braid to mono; triple surgeon, improved barrel knot, double-uni, or my personal favorite, a slim beauty, and then measure its diameter. I would use this knot's diameter to establish the inside diameter of the smallest guide for the rod I was building. If I got it wrong I would have only myself to blame. I can pass a connection of 65# braid and 50# mono through a 7mm guide without issue. A proper knot doesn't take up NEARLY the area that folks imagine it does. 100# test mono is 0.99 mm, 100# braid is 0.46 mm. Unless you plan to tie a Christmas bow, your intended line connections will VERY easily pass a 10 mm guide or top. They would actually pass an 8mm without issue, but I always allow extra for the sloppy knot boys. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/04/2014 04:06PM by Jim Gamble. Agree with Phil. Stakes are too high not to prove it to yourself before applying the wrap and epoxy. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
