Clutch for Power Wrapper

I have a PacBay Power Wrapper with deluxe metal chuck. There are many times when I want to do small rotations or wrap by hand, especially with smaller blanks and guides. The unit works great as a power wrapper and also as a hand wrapper when I disengage the belt, but there's no way to easily switch between the two modes without having to reach over and take belt on/off each time. The motor allows you to turn without power but far too much resistance is required IMO. Is there a replacement motor that works better for this, a switch, clutch or some other solution that addresses this issue?
Or do I just need to get over it and get a life? Thanks in advance. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/20/2014 05:45PM by Teague Parker. Re: Clutch for Power Wrapper

Teague,
Your problem is exactly the reason that I currently use a DC gear motor with a motor that can be easily slowed to 1/2 rpm in either direction. I had the same issue but the DC gear motor, power supply and pedal took care of the issue. Be safe Re: Clutch for Power Wrapper

The lower the gear ratio for the motor to turn the rod the more "back pressure" you'll have when trying to turn the rod by hand.
You can change pulleys to get something that will suit you a bit better, or even rig up some sort of lever to lift the motor and release tension when you need to. ................ Re: Clutch for Power Wrapper

My CPW is an older model. It does not have any belts and is directly connected to the motor which is completely free wheeling. I can hand turn or use the power. The only fault with it is sometimes the lower speed is hard to control, but I can slow it down by putting hand pressure on the rod. I am thinking that a better foot control may resolve this small problem. Re: Clutch for Power Wrapper

Flex Coat Company may still sell a clutch, although I'm not sure what models it fits. It may only work on the Flex Coat wrapper units.

You can get the Flex-Coat slip clutch and instead of installing it just put it in the chuck you have on your lathe now.

Roger I looked at photos of you set up super cool. Is the dc motor power supply and foot pedal hard to find? Re: Clutch for Power Wrapper

Hello Teague.
I'm with John buy the SL1 from MudHole or whoever and just chuck it up in your wrapper chuck. Tight Wraps. Bob, New Bern, NC. Re: Clutch for Power Wrapper

I have the same wraper I removed the chcuk wheels and the shaft incert.
You will be left with the main body stand main pully wheel witch is press into the main body stand with a bearing and male shaft 5/16 and a set screw hole. Flex coats slip cluck has a 1/4 shaft and the hole on the pully shaft is 5/16 so i shime the hole 1/16 installed the cluch with a new set screw works fine. Will post pics soon.
