I am a first time rod builder. Going to build a rod for fluke. Looking for a good sensitive feel. The rod is 7' any suggestion on what type of guide, how many to use and what would be the right spacing. Also would like a suggestion for a good reel seat Re: First time rod

Spinning or conventional reel? It makes a difference. Re: First time rod

In general, I like fuji alconites.
In general, I like graphite reel seats. In general, I like to space my guides to give equal distribution of load when under tension. Re: First time rod

If you're going the conventional route it's hard to beat a Seeker Hercules LT for fluke.
Fuji Alconite, Pac Bay Minimas or Amtak Virtus would all work well. I went with Minimas with the inserts and an Alps single trigger aluminum reel seat. Absolutely love the set up. Re: First time rod

It is going to be conventional rod going with a IS701M and a IS701H to start I use jig heads all of the time mostly 1 1/2 and 2 oz. David I am interested in the seeker you have what is the number of the blank. Going to use Fuji or alps guides not sure yet. Going to use a alps exposed blank trigger seat. Guide spacing is a concern not sure how to decide the number and the spacing or just use a spacing chart. Re: First time rod

Hi John,
Read the article on static testing in the library and learn how to do it. It's the only way to get the guide spacings spot on. Don't pre-empt how many guides you might need. Once you get some experience you will get an idea but that won't always be right. ESFNEM Col Port Kembla, NSW Australia Re: First time rod

Also a good thing to get info on is the Spiral Wrap
With any conventional rod the rod wants to TURN over and bring the line to the lowest point The 180 The spiral wrap brings the line to the 180 Lowest point and keeps the rod Stable so you worry about the fish and do not have to Try To Keep The Rod and Reel UPRIGHT Bill - willierods.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
