Have any rod builders experienced or know of any #6 Curved Unibutts failing this season.Primarily these would have been fished out of the gunwale rather than a fighting chair. Re: #6 Unibutt Failures

Understand. Describe the failure that occurred.

typical failure is when the alignment pin, or gimbal spins. I haven't seen one that has "snapped" If one has, you should post a photo. Re: #6 Unibutt Failures

PacBay makes the Permalign series of butts that were created to eliminate both butt component alignment and gimbal failure issues. To date we have not seen one come back due to a failure in these areas.
We have seen a handful come back that failed (sheered clean through) at the reel seat body, just below the end of the removable ferrule. These have all been pure overload failures, and all have been from the northeast where they were used in rail-fighting bluefin tuna. Both lines of our fighting butts are designed to be used in a harness and/or in a fighting chair. Use in fixed rod holders is explicitly not covered under the warranty. When you add up the elements involved in certain bluefin fishing practices ( i.e. 200lb braid + reels with massive drag capability + 130# class Eglass rod in a fixed rod holder vs. 1000lb tuna swimming the opposite direction of a rocking boat) you quickly see that the fighting butt is the weak link. We could possibly make a one piece, solid steel fighting butt intended to function as a crane, but I don't think people would want to pay for it. -The Batson TEAM BatsonEnterprises.com Re: #6 Unibutt Failures

I have never used a Pac Bay butt on a Chatham, nor would I just because of that. 1 failure resulting in a snapped unibutt is 1 too many. Not designed to be used on gunnel fights? Interesting. You might want to get an American Tackle, Stuart or Aftco and cut one open and see how they do theirs. Theirs don't have any issues. Stuart especially. Best butt in the industry. Tunamen need a reliable butt and if you warranty it for some styles and not others, you really should consider not making it. Just my 2 cents. I thank you gentlmen for your comments. PacBay will continue to create, revise, improve, and warranty products for their intended use.
I am still interested in a description of the failure mentioned in the original post, even if the butt is not ours. Thanks -The Batson TEAM BatsonEnterprises.com Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/22/2013 11:28AM by Geoff Staples. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
