Fly line weight and rod action question

Hello all,

I have a couple of questions about the influence of the physical weight of fly line on a blank's action. For example, I have a QUICKLINE 11’0” 4pc 7weight Switch rod blank which has a fast action. Pac Bay recommends line between 425-500gr.

If I exceed these weight parameters will it slow down the action of the blank? Is there a point where exceeding line weight recommendations becomes counter productive because you adversely affect the action of the blank?

Any input would be appreciated.

thanks,
Tom.

It won't slow the action. It will require less line in the air to load the rod. Yes, if you increase the weight too much things go south.

Right, the action will remain the same but less line length will be required to load the rod. As more and more line goes past the rod tip, or an equivalent amount of line length to the recommended line will slow the speed of the rod.

Okay, I think I understand it now. Thanks for the information.

long fly rods can handle huge grain windows.
My friend puts 350gr on a 12'0" #10 switch rod that I put up to 550gr.

Some like to cast off the tip and mid-section. Others like to cast on the butt. However at one point the rod will run out of guts and more grains will degrade performance.
You have to experiment.
