Do any of you gentlemen have any suggestions how to finish off one of these blanks. The blank has a wrap up to the ferrules but looks bad in my opinion. Any tricks on how to finish off these blanks so they look uniform and smooth?
Thanks for the assistance. Toby Wiggins Re: Orvis "Superfine" blanks

Are you talking about the resin ridges left on the blank surface?

It's not resin, it's a thin black wrap that is present on most of the blank. Trouble is, when you put the pieces together there's a pronounced gap between the next section and the wrap. Re: Orvis "Superfine" blanks

To tell you the truth...you might be right, it could be resin? I've never dealt with a blank like this before. Re: Orvis "Superfine" blanks

Toby, I built on one of these blanks back some time in the late 1980s. I built on a 9.5 foot fly rod blank which they labeled as a "rivermaster" blank. The ridges were the result of the wrapping they put on the blank when it was "baked" in curing process. They marketed it as being more durable because they had not sanded the blank. Whether there was any truth to that I don't know. All I know is that it was and is a very nice rod blank. I still use it as my "go to" rod for steelhead.

I usually don't like paited blanks, as the paint is nothing more than dead weight. it's easy to sand it off. you can do it without any damage for the blank (actually it will marginally improve it)
use caution and time, start with 320 grit, then 600 and 800 (or car polish if you like it to be absolutely top notch) _______________________________________________ If I'm not going to catch anything, then I'd rather not catch anything on flies. Let your blank as it came to you.
Just put à little wrap at transition betwen unsande/sanded portion if you wish. The blank is sanded at the put over section for better fit (a little longer for futur wear). Re: Orvis "Superfine" blanks
