One Part Finishes

Which of the latest one part finishes that have come to the rod building market lately have you guys tried and what are the pros and cons of each? I have seen several but from what I can find on the 'net reviews seemed to be mixed. Is any one of them an epoxy beater??

An epoxy beater?? The one part finishes are not designed for a "high build" finish on your wraps, the epoxies are. Both Trondak U-40 Perma Gloss and Lumiseal will out last epoxies, but they would take a dozen coats or more to achieve a high build.

I think you are talking about Threadmaster One

The one part finishes all beat epoxies in one critical area that some of us have a problem with: allergic reactions to the epoxies.
Some of us know there is a bottle open with an epoxy in it at several yards its so bad.
Work with enough of them long enough and you may get it too.

Bill, thread master one is totally different from U-40 or Lumiseal. They are solvent based and Threadmaster One is water based and is much thicker. I am testing this finish right now, so my verdict on it is still out. I am not sure it is better than either epoxy or the moisture cure thin finishes, but I am going to find out by extensive testing on my own.

Lou, I have never experienced what you describe with epoxy finishes, and have never heard of anyone else experiencing it either.

Randolph,
long may you personally stay blissful then.
Not something those who have it would wish on anyone.
Google it.
If you don't want to read just select images.
Then you will know why so many of us keep trying alternatives to epoxies.

Randolph,

Epoxy sensitivity is far more common than you think. It is serious and cannot be reversed. There are builders who frequent this forum who have developed serious respiratory problems. among other things. On the advice of my doctors, I use nitrile gloves and wear a respirator when working with epoxies and/or solvents. It didn't hit me until I was over 70 and it ain't fun!!!

Mike (Southgate, MI)
If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!!

Epoxy allergies are very common in the boat building community. I know some great custom Carolina boat builders who can no longer even step foot in a boat house. You can certainly develop the allergy over time if it has your number.

Guys, I am not saying that people are not sensitive or even deathly allergic to many different things, I was just saying that I had never experienced it, and had never heard of it very much until right now. I was one of the first, if not the first person to use two part finishes nearly 40 years ago. I have never had a problem in all that time. I am sorry some people have such adverse reactions.

The UV finish from Cork 4 U is a great finish. Con: would be up front cost in the equipment and extra space for it, also getting an replacement bulb. Pro: it is simple to use and quick very quick. It takes a little practice to get used to it but so does everything. Also you can get a higher build very quickly. It’s absolutely great for repairs.

I like the way threadmaster one goes on and looks but I had customers call and tell me fishing in the rain it clouds up so I did my own test put it over wraps and over just the blank let it cure for 4 days put it on a table in the back yard with sprinkler going and it did cloud up even got soft and peeled off easy

That is the best way to test finishes and CP. OUTDOORS in all weather conditions and for as long as you can. A finish that looks OK after a few days may deteriorate dramatically after a few weeks or longer.
