I just put together a nice bamboo rod. I have it all complete but putting on the guides and I was looking it over before I started the guides and found out I have put the slide band on backwards. I used U 40 Rod Bond epoxy to assembly the reel seat and grip to the rod. The reel seat hardware I used for this build is RA7L2SKC-SG Aluminum/Shiny Gunsmoke Anodizing from Batson.
Is there any way to remove the butt cap to correct my mistake?

Try boiling the very end of the reel seat in a plastic bag, like a Ziplock for ten minutes. This should soften the epoxy enough to pry the cap off. You may have to repeat the process depending upon how strong the bond is. I use this method to remove reel seats in their entirety.

I agree with Phil that heat will be required to break the bond, especially since you'll want to reuse the butt cap. Like Phil I have also used boiling water to remove entire reel seats bonded in place with Rod Bond. What I found recently though is that while standard Rod Bond can be broken with heat (boiling water) removal of a seat bonded with Quik Bond was more difficult. In this case I made many immersions in the boiling water and the reel seat wouldn’t release. Not concerned with reusing the wooden insert I ended up chunking off the wood with a cutting tool. The Quik Bond looked like it hadn’t deteriorated at all when exposed to boiling water.

Maybe someone more familiar with the two products can comment on whether they have different breaking points when exposed to heat.

Thanks all. I had an idea that some type of heat would be needed to breakdown the epoxy but wasn’t sure what method to use. I felt stupid for doing this, but at least I found it before the customer got it.

Another thing that you can do, is to drill a hole in the butt cap, insert a nice fitting blank on the inside of the current blank and then chuck the rod into a lathe.
Then, just use the lathe to cut the butt cap off the spinning rod.

How does he reuse the butt cap, cutting it off with a Dremel or lathe?

An update on the butt cap removal. In addition to reaching out to all you guys I also e-mailed Trondak U-40. Later that same day I got a call from them with their suggestion as how to get my butt off. I tried it and it worked great. Here it is. Heat the butt cap with an alcohol burner. With leather gloves on grip the butt cap in one hand and with your other hand grip the reel seat start working it loose as the epoxy breaks down. I turned around the slide ring, cleaned and reinstalled the butt cap. A lot of hard work saved.

Carefull when using any flame I tried it on a guide wrap and ruined a blank that I had to replace

The hot water probable would have worked Just might have taken longer
