So I am looking at building an 8ft spinning rod. I will be using it for throwing 1 oz lures as far as possible (from a pier) and retreiving the lure with a jerking action, short quick jerks kinda like walking a dog under the surface. I'll be leaning over the railing with the tip of the rod facing down towards the water while retrieving the lure. I want the rod to be light enough to fish all day yet still have the backbone to control anything I hook.
Anyone have any suggestions for a rod blank? Re: 8 foot spinning rod blank help

James,
I use the Lamiglas MB-1E for throwing gotcha plugs from piers (Kure). This blank was recommended when i asked the same question as you. I picked up RF Legacy Elite 726 from Swampland at the Expo for the same but haven't built on it yet. Roger Re: 8 foot spinning rod blank help

Might look at the Batson CB80H. I think it's just a bit stiffer overall that the 5 power popping blanks I've used, may help some on the presentation. Re: 8 foot spinning rod blank help

Hello James.
My favorite for pier fishing with a Got-Cha plug for blues, Spanish and what-ever is a Seeker P 704 split grip down locking with a Pflueger Arbor model 7450X using 12# - 15# braid, you can throw it a mile and bring 20# ray's if you have to. I got a 7.5# Spanish of the old Sportsmans pier before it was torn down with this set-up. Sorry this is a 7' rod, but I still like it. Bob, New Bern, NC. Edited 1 time(s). Some great blank recommendations for you here. I would add the Batson SW967 and the RCL80XL to that list. Both are fantastic blanks with light enough tips that you can throw 3/8 oz. lures but enough back bone to whip kings. I have caught several 40"+ kings and 6' plus Blacktips on my RCL70XL throwing poppers from the kayak. Plus they are light enough in total weight that you can cast and work plugs all day without getting worn out.
And like the Swampland blanks they can take a licking and keep on ticking. In my experience that is important for both pier and kayak rods. I have an SW967 that I'm prety sure I've used hard for 12 or 13 years now. Hope this helps - good luck! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
