A friend has asked me to repair a Winston boron rod made for him by a family member. The upper two sections of the rod were broken and Winston supplied replacement sections. The particular thread used to wrap the rod is long gone, so I suggested one possibility would be for me to strip the guides from the lower two sections and rewrap them along with the two new sections with the thread that I would use.
I haven't built on any Winston blanks before. Examining the blank, it appears that the paint/finish is pretty soft, so I'm a little worried that the stripping of the old guides (with single edged razor blade) and cleanup of the old wraps will significantly damage the finish. I've never had problems with sanded blanks, but painted/finished ones seem like they might be a little tricky. Any suggestions to minimize damage to the finish? Any safe solvents that I can use on that finish that won't melt it when cleaning it up? Thanks! Re: Suggestions needed for stripping and re-wrapping a Winston boron rod

Don't use any solvents and don't scrape the blank with a tool. Cut the wraps on top of the guide foot, remove the guide and grab the thread.
Unravel the thread to remove most of the epoxy and use your fingernail with a small amount of heat to remove the rest. You will remove some of the finish but that should be entirely covered from the new wrap. Re: Suggestions needed for stripping and re-wrapping a Winston boron rod

This BUGS the heck out of me
Ya pay what $400.00 plus for a blank and the finish will come off with ?? alcohol ??? They should be using Auto Finish Like said a little heat - Depending on finish on the threads ??? Cut on the foot and peel keeping it warm and the thread should come off bringing the finish with it Bill - willierods.com Re: Suggestions needed for stripping and re-wrapping a Winston boron rod

Bill,
Gatti uses auto finish (they say - at least) and I have dulled the finish with too heavy an application of alcohol. I hate refinishing painted rods. Herb Re: Suggestions needed for stripping and re-wrapping a Winston boron rod

Troy, Do like Bill said, Or try my way , It works well for me, I always talk to my customer before I do anything
I know it can be a trick to strip a rod. so try ;;1 dull the shine on the guide thread,I use 400 wet dry sand paper (wet it ). sand VERY LIGHTLY. now wrap with the color you want over the old wraps, it should look good and save you the chance of messing up the finish, and save you time . I always use N.P.C. #A thread, pack thread tight and finish as you would with other wraps. Good luck ,hope this a help to you . let me know what you did and how it came out please.
