I'm thinking to shorten a 7'9" fast action 4-pc fly blank about 10 inches from the butt section. I think I will be able to slow down the action (which is my preference) this way and may lost some butt strength. It's a 3 wt rod and I plan to play small fish with it. So think the lost of butt strength doesn't really bothers me.
Not that I not wanting to get a proper slower action rod but in this part of the world it ain't easy to find one (due to limited shipping size limit) without breaking the bank and I'm a 'blue collar' fly angler. So I seek the opinions of individuals who had done this. Thanks. Re: Shortening a 4-pc fly blank

I never liked to shortern a rod I would look for a different rod to fit your requirements , I think you will be happer a I know some people will tell you they do it all the time but I don't . there again I am a new person at building rods , just remember the rod is yours an you fish it an live with it no matter what you do to it , an you can build the blank any way you want Re: Shortening a 4-pc fly blank

I would not shorten the blank either. What are you looking for exactly? Might want to look into fiberglass for a blank if you are looking for something short, full flexing and in a light line weight. Re: Shortening a 4-pc fly blank

I would look for another blank as well. Has to be a blank out there that meets your build criteria. Re: Shortening a 4-pc fly blank

Why don't you just drop the butt section and measure with CCS what you have? Another consideration is to get a longer 4 piece blank and drop the butt section. Or, as the others have suggested, just pick a different blank that's closer to what you want.

I'm a fan of glass rods. Just wondering if I could make 'like a glass' graphite rods. Not necessarily exactly but rather as close as possible. I'd thought that it would be interesting. Yeah... and I know I could have done it with different glass blanks... but that would be less interesting... Thanks for all the replies... Re: Shortening a 4-pc fly blank

Got it. It's always fun to experiment so go for it. Let us know what turns out.
