Hi to all the people on this forum. I am a new rod builder and i would like to thank everyone for your help as this forum has helped me so much but i thought it would be time that i made my first post. I am building a 700m calstar for a friend but the problem is i dont have a reel for this type of rod so am having trouble deciding how i can place the guides. I do have a rod recipe but i wanted to do a static test but is this possible with out the reel which will be used. any help would be greatly appreciated cheers. chris CKR Re: Guide placement without a reel

The fact that you're wanting reel info indicates that you may be trying to work with a NGC or GPS. Most of the time choosing a reel from the library from the same "series" will give you a starting place that will ultimately get you to a sweet spot with your layout. If you have a good idea that the rod will take a 4000 or 6000 series reel, select it in the premeasured library of GPS and use those numbers as a starting place. If you have no idea what reel will be used, 27X will provide a good starting point. Re: Guide placement without a reel

Will this rod be used with a conventional reel or spinning reel? Re: Guide placement without a reel

Are you putting roller guides on this rod? If so, just use the typical size and spacing as are used with the rods in the afore mentiolned link. These are proven sizes and locations. Roger Re: Guide placement without a reel

I am planing on using this rod as a spinning setup. Have purchased amtac virtus guides(heavy). I just thought it is better to test with the reel which is going to be used ? Re: Guide placement without a reel

Yes it is. At least try to set it up with a reel that you suspect is at least close to what the customer will use.

What I have done when setting up spinning rods using NGC/27X guide layout, and didn't have the reel the customer wanted to use, is take my digital calipers and head to the local tackle shop and get the measurements off of the reel. Good way to get the measurements you need without actually having the reel in hand. Kristopher Byers Villain Custom Rods www.villaincustomrods.com Re: Guide placement without a reel

Chris,
Always a nice idea to keep a box of various sized reels around to use for reel sizing during builds. The reels don't have to work. Just nice to have the frames around to have a good idea of sizes. Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
