Making your own rod.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi guys, I'm new here and this is my fisrt thread.
Hope you'll like it.

Ok this has been annoying from since I was a child.
My dad has a 1980's star rod handcrafted model TH-50.
It's my favourite rod of all time but they don't make'em in that style anymore.

Which leads me to think.
Is there a way to make my own rods ?
What do I need to know ?
What do I need ?
Where can I get the things needed ?
And how do I make my own IGFA graded fishing rods ?

Top link for the suppliers on your left. Not sure where you are at but it's in N. Carolina.

First thing I would suggest is you get a rodbuilding book. There are a number of them out there, but Tom Kirkmans' book is better than most and gives a great overview of what you need and how to proceed. Another way to get a good overview is go to the Flexcoat and Mudhole sites and view their videos.

Find one of the suppliers on the left and have them help you put together a kit of parts for your first rod. They can also help you with the short list of tools needed, or you can ask us here about the simple way to get started with tools and fixtures. It's pretty minimal at first.

Good luck! It's an addicting hobby.

You would have to fly to the show, it is in the US ... North Carolina. Not too far from ABC, but it is an added expense.

I would suggest buying a book for starters ... [www.amazon.com].

After reading the book twice, go watch a bunch of YouTube videos. Beyond that, read/participate in this forum.

Yes!

> What do I need to know ?

All of the fundamentals can be found in Rodbuilding Guide by Tom Kirkman. It's a short full color book that can be read in as little as a single sitting. Mud Hole, Get Bit Outdoors, Hydra, Flex Coat, Batson, and others have videos on their websites and on youtube to help get you going.

> What do I need ?

You need thread, guides, rod blank, grip material, adhesive epoxy, finish epoxy, a means of holding the rod and a way to apply tension to your thread, as well as a few hand tools (rat tail files or reamers, exacto knife or razor blades, burnishing tool, masking tape, rubbing alcohol, etc.).

> Where can I get the things needed ?

If you look to the left side of this forum, all of the sponsors are involved in rod building in some way, some are manufacturers and some are retailers. All of the retailers I've talked to are more than willing to help someone get what they need to get started.

You should be able to find the IGFA specs in their regulations somewhere. I've never looked for them personally, so I'll defer to others here.

Thanks everyone, this is alot more info. than I ever expected to get.
I was thinking about getting some books.
THT users have reccomended to get Dale Clemens books.
I think I'll just get the books from both the 2 writers.

Albert

Check out this site. It Is a 12 part article that shows the basics of rod building and the equipment needed. It is about building fly rods, but much of the information pretains to any kind of rod building.

Hope this helps, and enjoy the hobby.

Dale Clemens' books are very good - Tom Kirkman's book is probably a little better for a beginner as it is written clearly and the objective is to get you building a fishing rod in minimal time.

Here's a source for sbooks and videos:
I agree that Tom's book is easy to understand, and gives you all the info needed to build a solid, dependable fishing rod.

The only thing special about an IGFA rod is the measurements. They don't dictate anything else.

I'm the one who directed you to this forum from THT. Your welcome!

Like I said...the greatest (most well run) site on the internet.

To many variables for a price of parts. Like guide selection (high end and lower end) ringed or roller guides, grips, reel seat or unibutt and blank to just give you a price. The best thing to do is give a sponser like Mud Hole a email or call tell them what you want and they will give you a better idea of a price.

There is a lot if info out there for learning. Videos, Internet, Books. Like they said above the ICRBE is the place to learn the most at one place but it is a lot to comprehend in two days. Mudhole has rodbuilding classes in various areas of the country also. Might have one near you. [www.mudhole.com] Well maybe not if I read the end of you email address right...(Netherlands Antilles)

I have both clemmens books the originals and that is where I learned as there was no internet. I also recommend RodMaker magazine to keep up with the new ideas that come along once you have the basics. Rods are like potato chips you can't just build one.

I don't think mudhole is in the NA area either, wish it was tough.
Thanks a lot for the replies, I'll start with the books and after with the build estimate.
